Lighthouse by the Sea

The Lighthouse block is all paper foundation pieced.  It has a few funky angles that were well suited to paper piecing.

I attached each side by pinning and sewing to the angle in two separate seams.

I approached the top in the same way.  Then I attached the sandy strip to the bottom to complete the block.

All the blocks for the Home by the Sea quilt are finished.  It's time to sew the top together.

Cotton Club Quilt

Introducing my Cotton Club quilt.  The pattern for this quilt is available in the new issue of Quilter's World magazine, Autumn 2016.

This issue is filled with lots of gorgeous Fall projects - Yum!

Quilt Stats:

Size:  84" x 96"
Block Size:  12"
Fabric:  Tonga Batiks Salsa by Timeless Treasures
Batting:  Warm and White by the Warm Company

Thread:  King Tut by Superior

The quilt top is made from one block in two different color variations,  This block...

...and this block.  I made my quilt in Fall colors, for the Autumn issue, but it would look lovely in any number of color schemes.  Just remember to keep the color values the same to achieve a pleasing design.

I quilted this in a simple loopy meander all-over design with a nice blendy gray thread by Superior, King Tut - my favorite thread for quilting.

This photo shows the complete quilt top, and gives you a nice sense of how the design makes your eyes move across the quilt.

The Cotton Club quilt is in the Autumn 2016 issue of Quilter's World magazine.   This issue should be available in your local quilt shop soon, or you can purchase a digital issue online from Quilter's World here:  Quilter's World Autumn 2016 Digital Issue.

If you do sew a quilt from one of my patterns, please share a pic.  I would love to see it!

Cookies without Calories (Sneaky-Peeky!)

The Cookie Exchange is an upcoming fabric line by Sweetwater for Moda.  Aren't these yummy?  I spent a couple of days cutting them up for a big Christmas quilt I'm sewing this Spring.

Love this true red.  Red doesn't get any redder than this!

This white on white print features a cross-hatching design.  It's super pretty.  I also have some of this in red and light blue.

The snowflake print is fun, too.  I love this green.  The snowflakes really look like they are falling over this print.

Here is the same fabric with red snowflakes on a white background.  Wouldn't this look terrific in a red and white quilt?

There is also a light blue with different Christmas carols and sayings in white.  "Merry Christmas", "Joy", "Believe, and my favorite, "Peace".  I have these cut into triangles, labelled and bagged.  How do you organize your pieces when you are sewing?  Leave a comment below.

Have a wonderful day!

McDowell County, North Carolina Quilt Trail

I was editing some pictures from a summer trip this morning and came across these quilt blocks from the McDowell County, North Carolina quilt trail, so I'm sharing them today.
This first one was out in the countryside, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Another shot from the country drive, guardrail included.

These blocks are on the side of a brick building in downtown Marion, North Carolina.

Quilt blocks are everywhere in Marion.  I'm assuming this was on some kind of government building.

Another drive by photo - a little blurry, but too pretty to leave out!

Really cool!  Birds, mountains, and a sunrise or sunset.

I hope you enjoyed it!

Have a wonderful day,

Jennifer Schifano Thomas

Tucking in Thread Ends - Aura Hexagon Quilt

Here's a look at the Aura quilt without tangled thread ends all over it.

I had enough time yesterday to weave in just over half of the thread ends.

I'm liking the results.

Not long now!

Where's William?

Where's my kitty, William?  Can you see him in my quilt cabinet?  He nosed his way in there while I was eating my lunch and watching a Craftsy class.

There he is!  I love it.  He just wanted to cuddle up with a quilt for nap time.  Oh kitty!

Hope you are having a wonderful day!

Cutting Log Cabin Strips

I like the way this Log Cabin block came out so much, that I'm making some more.

First, I had an ironing board disaster.  The metal part of my ironing board was so old that it actually snapped in half.  I was pretty surprised - I didn't know that could happen.  My husband offered to weld it, but I opted to just get a new one.  The new one has a bright blue and white chevron pattern on the cover (see above).  That is quite a change from my old stained and torn muslin cover.  I wonder how long it will look this pretty.

I had just enough time to cut strips for four more blocks.  I sorted them by size and value into little zip lock baggies. This should help to keep them from getting mixed up.  I have a few other projects in the works, so it could be a while before I find time to sew the blocks.

Here's one of the fabrics, cut into a strip.  Isn't it an interesting pattern?  These fabrics all came from a jelly roll, so they coordinate nicely.  I hope to finish writing the tutorial for this block and post it soon.

Have you sewn any Log Cabin quilts?  Leave a comment below.

Have a wonderful day!

Black Friday Craftsy Sneeky-Peeky!

This is an affiliate advertisement.

Are you a Craftsy fan?  I am.  Maybe even more than a fan - I could be addicted!  I have to get my Craftsy fix every day with my lunch break.  I munch on my sandwich, crackers, and sparkling flavored water while watching and learning from Craftsy videos.  It's fun!

I've taken loads of classes about machine quilting, uses for different sewing machine feet, and even one class about pizza making.  It's free to sign up for a Craftsy membership, and you can even take a few free mini-classes to start.

Did you know Craftsy also sells terrific high quality supplies for all your crafting needs, too? I've taken advantage of a few sales myself, and been quite pleased with the results.  I especially enjoy the "surprise" fat quarter fabric boxes.  What is more fun than getting a fabric goody package in your mailbox?
