Hello! Today we will be sewing Star of Summer, block #11 in the Star Block of the Month Tutorial Series. This block has evolved quite a bit. It started out looking very different. As I was sewing my original idea, I had problem, after problem, after problem. I decided to scrap that design, salvaged the pieces of the block that were working, did a redesign, and came up with this star. I like it! I hope you do, too. As you are sewing, remember that all blocks finish at 12" and seam allowances are 1/4". If you need any of the past tutorials, please visit the "Star Block of the Month" tab in the upper right corner of my blog.
Star of Summer
And away we go!
The fabrics I used in this block are from top to bottom, Pink, Purple, Lilac, and Red.
These fabrics are all by
Robert Kaufman. They are a combination of Jennifer Sampou's Studio Stash line and Artisan Batiks. Beautiful!
Cutting Instructions:
Please bear with me a bit. The photos of the cut pieces are a little bit mixed up because of my design change. I'll try to write the cutting instructions next to each group to help clarify. If you have any questions, please ask!
Pink: Cut 4 ea. quarter square triangles A from 1 each 5-1/4" square
Cut 2 ea. 2-7/8" squares B
Purple: Cut 4 ea. quarter square triangles A from 1 each 5-1/4" square
Red: Cut 2 ea. 2-7/8" squares B
Purple (Same fabric as above purple):
Cut 2 ea. 4-7/8" squares C
Lilac: Cut 4 ea. 4-7/8" squares C
Sewing the Block:
(all seams are 1/4")
Step 1: Sew one each Pink triangle A to one each Purple triangle A. The Purple triangle should be on the left side; the Pink triangle should be on the right side. Repeat to make four sets.
Cut two of the Lilac 4-7/8" squares C in half diagonally to yield four triangles.
Sew one Lilac triangle to each Pink/Purple triangle set. You should have a total of four corner units.
Step 2: Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the reverse side of all the Pink 2-7/8" squares B.
Pair them right sides together with the Red 2-7/8" squares B. Sew 1/4" away from the drawn line on both sides.
Cut on the drawn lines.
Open out, and press.
Sew the triangle square units into pairs, as shown.
Sew the pairs together to form a pinwheel unit.
Step 3: Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the reverse side of all the Purple 4-7/8" squares C.
Pair them right sides together with the remaining Lilac 4-7/8" squares C/
Sew 1/4" away from the drawn line on both sides.
Cut on the drawn lines.
Open out, and press. You should have four each Purple/Lilac half-square triangle units.
Step 4: Lay out the block. Be sure the Lilac triangles on the corner units are pointing towards the outside of the block.
Sew the units into three rows.
Sew the rows together to complete the Star of Summer block. Smile!
Not the best lighting in this picture, but here's my Star of the Month blocks to date. Only one more to sew! Be sure to join me next month for the last block in this series. If you sew a block, please share it with the
Quilters Show and Tell group on Facebook.
