Tutorial: How to Thread a Bernina Bernette 705 Sewing Machine

A reader wrote in recently asking how to thread a Bernina Bernette 705.  So here you go!  I pulled my machine out and wrote this tutorial.  I hope it's helpful.

Lucky me, I have the original manual.  It's a little dog eared, but it's packed full of handy information.

 Page 32 has the threading diagram and instructions.  When you look at the machine, the threading procedure is not obvious, so this is really necessary until you get used to this machine.  Let's follow along and thread the machine.  Before threading, you are instructed to turn the power switch off and raise the needle bar.

 This is the back of the machine.  I'm using some bright red orange Aurifil to make it easy to see the thread path. 

Step 1:  Pull the thread through the guide on the back of the machine.  See the little metal thingy on the right side of the photo with the thread running through it? That's the guide.

 Here's a close-up photo of the thread guide on the back of the machine so you can see how it should look with the thread going through it.

 Step 2:  Pull the thread across the top of the machine to the front.  The thread should go into the groove in the top of the machine and fall naturally into place between the tension discs (see arrow).  

 Step 3:  The metal thingy to the left of the thread is called the thread take up spring.  Your thread will go through the thread take up spring from the right to the left.

 Step 4:  The thread goes up and then through the thread take up lever from the right to the left.

 Step 5:  The thread goes down towards the needle and through the large guide (circled above).

 Step 6:  The thread goes through the small guide right next to the needle.

 Step 7:  Thread the needle from front to back.

I did a test sew with these two scrap strips of Island Batik fabric, and voila!  A perfect seam.  This machine is fun to sew with!  I think I will keep it set up and use it for a while.
