Quilty Questions ~ How to Keep a Cat Off the Ironing Board?

Today's Quilty Question:  How to Keep a Cat Off the Ironing Board?

Cats love ironing boards!  They are toasty warm.  They are elevated.  They are where the action is.  So how do you keep your furry friends off the ironing board?  Here are a few ideas.

My cats refused to participate in this experiment.  They were busy sleeping in the warm sunshine.  I'll be using Pepper here in the photos.

Technique #1:  Spray bottle of water.  This plant mister works well with my cats.  After a spray or two, I can just leave the bottle on the board and they stay away.  Plus, it's handy for pressing stubborn fabrics.

Technique #2:  When you aren't using your board, leave a crinkly sheet of aluminum foil on top.  Depending on the cat, they may be surprised by the noise when they jump up on the board.  This worked for one of my cats, but later I found another cat taking a nap on the foil.

Technique #3:  Don't oil your ironing board!  After a while of not oiling the board it will make a scary screeching noise when you fold or unfold it, possibly scaring the cat away.

Technique #4:  Don't allow the cat in the sewing room.  I don't recommend this for two reasons.  One, the cat will likely sit outside the closed door meowing loudly and incessantly.  Two, you may be lonely without your kitty friend.

Technique #5:  The lint roller.  This is what I do the most.  I lint roll my ironing board and cutting table every time I am getting ready to sew.  It works.

Technique #6: Lint roll the cat.  My cats don't like this, but it doesn't seem to bother them enough to stay away for long.

Oh Kitty!

If you know me...you know I love my kitties!  I thought it would be fun to share some photos of my kitty helpers today.  This is Trail Mix, helping to hold down one of my hexie projects.

Beetle and friend, sitting on my table top sewing box.

William, inside the quilt cabinet.

Shadow and the Farmer's Market quilt.  He's a big, cuddly guy.

Kit Kat and a pile of fabric scraps.

Mama Cat and her babies, warm and cozy inside a Warm Company box.

Kitten mania on the scrap basket!

Aaaaah!  The ironing board is toasty warm.

Trail Mix found her way into the quilt cabinet, too.

The princess and the pea.

What?  I can't sit in here?  But it's a big box full of fabric!

Oh Kitty!  I hope that was fun for you, too.

My Sewing Tutu

No, I'm not dancing and quilting at the same time.  I'm nowhere near that coordinated!  The sewing Tutu came in the October Quilty Box.

I was excited to try it.  It fits over the top of  a wide mouth canning jar.  What a cute idea!

The pincushion top can be customized with the fabric of your choice.  I've been waiting for the "purrfect" project to use my "You've got to be kitten me" fabric.  This is it!  Meow.

I tried a few different jars before I found the right one.  The jar needs to be wide mouth ~ and have shoulders, otherwise the tutu falls down.  That could be embarrassing!

I filled my jar with a bunch of vintage buttons, but you could customize it with so many different possibilities.  This is my result.  I love it.  Room for pins, needles, scissors, thread, thimble, etc.  This is just right for my hand sewing tv nights.

This was just one of the fun surprises in the October Quilty Box.  I just received my November Quilty Box this week.  I'll show a peek into that package soon.  If you want to try Quilty Box for yourself, or send one to a friend, just click on the advertisement at the end of this post.

Scrappin' at the Scrap Pile

Yes, another kitten post.  I can't help it.  They're just so cute!  The little Calico is Queen of the Scrap Pile.  She's been napping on top of the pile for the last few days.  The tiny Ginger kitten is up there with her, watching the two boys "scrapping" on the carpet.

Something Good!

Look at this gorgeous spool of King Tut quilting thread in the breathtaking De Nile color.  I love Superior Threads!

I'll be quilting with this new batting by The Warm Company.  I'm really excited to try it.  100 percent cotton with 100 percent cotton scrim.  All natural - no glues, no dyes, all cotton, grown in the U.S.A.  Let me tell you, when I opened the package, the most wonderful, natural smell floated through my studio.  So comforting ~ I can't wait to start quilting.

I'll leave you with this picture of Beetle, the runt of the litter, but also the most independent.  What a sweet baby!  Four weeks old.

Have a wonderful day,

Kittens and Quilts - Oh My!

Look at these sweet babies!  A stray Mama cat has been visiting our back porch for a while.  She had her litter on May 13th, and moved them right into our home!

They stayed in this Warm Company batting box for a few days.

Here is Mama cat with her kittens, enjoying the Farmer's Market quilt.

This photo was taken today, on an old Sunflower quilt.  I love the way they pile up and sleep together.  So sweet.  The little orange one at the top of the photo has a future home, but the others all need loving homes, including the Mama.  If you are in the area, and have room in your home, please let me know.

Have a "Soft Kitty" day!

Where's William?

Where's my kitty, William?  Can you see him in my quilt cabinet?  He nosed his way in there while I was eating my lunch and watching a Craftsy class.

There he is!  I love it.  He just wanted to cuddle up with a quilt for nap time.  Oh kitty!

Hope you are having a wonderful day!

My Little Helper

This is Shadow, my quilting buddy.  Shadow is afraid of the vacumn cleaner, my husband, and large birds, but he has no fear of the quilting machine.  Why is this?  The first time he ever dared to enter my home, I was quilting.  Does the machine sound like a giant mama kat purring?  It's a mystery.

Yesterday I was able to work on the Aura hexagon quilt for most of the afternoon.

It's getting close.  I can see the edge.  Maybe I will be able to finish the quilting during my next session.  I can't wait to see how it looks when it comes off the rails.

Have a wonderful day!
