May Make it Modern with Hobbs featuring Blown Away

Disclaimer:  The products used to create this quilt were given to me by Island Batik and industry partners at no cost to me.
Introducing the Blown Away quilt ~ living free and in the wild.

Blown Away is my Island Batik Ambassadors challenge quilt for May Make it Modern with Hobbs.

The challenge was to create a modern quilt as defined by:  "the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, alternate grid work."

I chose these three fabrics from my Island Batik fabric collection, a yellow floral batik, a purple abstract batik, and a solid gray fabric for my project.

This is a close up of the pinwheel block in the lower right corner.  This area of my quilt had the heaviest quilting.

I used Hobbs Thermore batting.  This batting is especially designed for quilted clothing, but I've used it in several quilts, and it's fast becoming one of my favorites.  It's thin and so easy to work with.

Pinwheels spinning away in the wind on a blustery day.

I took the Pinwheel block from this Accuquilt book, and expanded it to flow across the quilt like it was "blowing away" on a windy day.

 Lovely folds of quilty goodness.

I used these perfectly matching Aurifil threads to quilt the Blown Away quilt.

I used the quilting lines to accentuate the movement and scale of the quilt.  I used the yellow thread over the yellow fabric and flowing into the gray area.  I did the same with the purple, letting it flow all the way across and into the borders.  I quilted a presser foot's width apart for the small block, then one inch apart for the medium size blocks, then one and a half inches apart for the large scale blocks.

I used the purple fabric for the binding.

More pretty folds of quilty goodness.

Scrappy Star Quilt Update

I've made a little progress on the Scrappy Star quilt.  I believe I left off with these sweet flying geese units on the last post about this project.

Here's some more geese units getting their corners trimmed off.

And pressed.  They look funny with only one triangle sewn on.  That could make an interesting design for another quilt though.  Hmmmmm......

Time to sew on the left corner triangles.

I think that large square with the pink print design is a future star center.

A tangled up mess from lots of chain piecing.  Does this happen to you, too?

Some flying geese units, chain pieced and ready to trim the left triangles.  I love that pretty pink floral fabric with the fresh spring green.

 More trimming!

My growing flock of geese up on the design wall.  Looks like they are flying south.

And one star block with all the units ready to sew together.  It's getting there!

The Making of the Star Sweeper Quilt

The Star Sweeper quilt was my Island Batik Ambassador challenge quilt for April.  You can read that post here:  Ready Set Go Baby Quilt Featuring Star Sweeper.  Today I'm going to show you some of what went into the making of this quilt.

First I moved this cat.

Then I quickly and accurately cut out my pieces with the Accuquilt Go.

I pieced this gorgeous block using Island Batik's Winter Park fabric collection.

Next, I took it apart because I misplaced some of the colors.  Ooops!  I got to test my new seam ripper from Quilty Box.  (It works well)

I sewed all sorts of units together to make the star blocks.

 I moved this cat.

I pieced the center of the quilt top.

Added the borders to finish the top.

I quilted straight lines on a diagonal out from the center.  I moved this cat.

I hand stitched this spacey sleeve onto the back of the quilt.

The Star Sweeper quilt.

Quilting the Happy Scrappy Quilt

I've begun the quilting on the Happy Scrappy quilt.  This quilt is square and has a design that radiates out from the center, making it a good candidate for concentric circle quilting.  I pin basted this quilt to prepare for quilting on the Janome Memory Craft.

I used a circle template to mark the first circle on my quilt.

I thought it would be fun to try out a few of the specialty stitches on my new sewing machine, so I quilted a circle of tulips.  I may plant another garden further into the quilting.  That was fun!

I'm quilting with a guide to keep the circles about one inch apart.

I got pretty far along, when this happened.  Fuzzy.  He said, "You are done for the evening".  Haha.  He is way too heavy to sit on my quilt while I'm working on it.  I moved him twice, but he kept coming back.  Time to put it away.  I can finish another day.
