Creative Borders and Binding featuring Hope Springs Eternal

Hope Springs Eternal.  This is my quilt for the April Island Batik Ambassador challenge.

Disclaimer:  The products used to create this quilt were given to me at no cost by Island Batik and industry partners.

This month's challenge is Creative Borders and Bindings.

We've been so inundated with news about the Coronavirus lately, that I wanted to create something pretty, Spring-like, and uplifting.  I pulled these bright, happy fabrics from my stash for my project.  The pink stash builder rolls were the perfect beginning for this quilt.

Here's the entire quilt.  My creative border features sweet fusible applique flowers.  The gold binding is not all that creative, but I usually match my binding fabric to the outer border fabric, so for me this is a creative binding!

Here's a close up of the sweet applique flowers.  I went around the edge with a small zigzag stitch and matching Aurifil thread in shades of pink and green.  This was a nice opportunity to try out the new Schmetz Super Nonstick Needles.  They did a fabulous job of sewing through the fusible web applique patches.

The blocks for the center part of the quilt are small.  I wanted to sew some 4" blocks, and this seemed like a good project for it.  However, something was not quite right, and they fought me the whole way through.  I'm not sure if I figured the patch sizes incorrectly, my cutting was poor, or my seam allowance was off, but I kept calm and sewed on. The results are fine, if you don't look too closely.  LOL.

I used Hobbs cotton batting and quilted an echo around the flowers and a loopy meander across the rest of the quilt with a white Aurifil thread.

The Hope Springs Eternal quilt looks pretty on my front porch glider.  This is where I do a lot of my hand stitching.

Close up.  I cut the green border and the pink outer border with Accuquilt strip dies.  I love how perfectly straight my strips come out when cut with the Accuquilt Go.

I backed my quilt with a gorgeous golden yellow fabric.  This is the same fabric I used for the binding.

 Lovely folds.

 Front porch steps.

Posing with some graceful climbing roses.

One Die Wonder ~ Featuring Hattie's Choice

Hello There!  I've been away from the computer all month working on a lot of secret sewing projects.  I managed to fit in my March Island Batik Ambassador quilt, too!  Here it is.

Disclaimer:  The products used in this quilt were given to me by Island Batik and industry partners at no cost to me.
This month's challenge was One Die Wonder with Accuquilt. Each ambassador received one of the four above BOB dies to sew a quilt.  The quilt had to be at least 45" x 60" and use the die in a way that showcased the blocks.

I received the Hattie's Choice die.  Look at the fun shapes in this block!  Diamonds, triangles, and kites.  I couldn't wait to play.

I used Island Batik's Faded Blue Jeans collection for this quilt.  The 2-1/2" strip pack gave me a nice variety of blues and whites.  I also used Island Batik solid black and white fabrics to round out my design.

If you are intimidated by sewing together triangles and diamonds, I wanted to show you how easy the Accuquilt die makes it.  There is no offset piecing to make the seams match up with Accuquilt dies.  See how the corners are automatically trimmed when you cut the pieces?  This makes them fit together perfectly, for perfectly easy and fun sewing time.

When I'm piecing, I like to play with my quilt units on a design wall.  This gives me ideas for future designs.  There are so many fun things you can do with the triangles and diamonds cut from the Hattie's Choice die.  Look at these fun shapes!

The triangle diamond units could make a jazzy border, or a fun hexagon star block, or a star.  So many ideas!

I didn't even see these butterfly shapes until after I pieced my quilt together.

My quilt also has this flowery diamond X shape.

And this curvy shape with a star in the negative space.

I used Schmetz needles and Aurifil thread for all of the piecing.  I used white Aurifil thread for the pebble quilting in the diamonds.

I used this Hobbs 80/20 Black batting because the majority of my quilt was solid black.

This shows the quilting in the border areas.  I quilted circles in the white borders, back and forth lines in the blue border, and a half feather along the outer black border.

I quilted a loopy meander in the black negative space, pebbles over the white diamonds, and back and forth lines over the blue triangles.

I used a yellow Island Batik fabric for the backing of my quilt.  I see snowflakes.  What do you see?

I bound the quilt with solid black to match the outer border.

 Pretty folds.

Let's Get Scrappy ~ Featuring the Flea Market Quilt

The Flea Market quilt is complete!

Disclaimer:  The product used to create this project was provided to me by Island Batik and industry partners at no cost to me.

Let's Get Scrappy is the January challenge for the Island Batik Ambassador program.
I dug into my Island Batik stash and really had fun choosing the rainbow of color for this quilt.

I was excited to use this older Accuquilt die to cut out the triangle units for this project.
It made them quick to cut and easy to piece, with the corners automatically trimmed off, it was easy to match the pieces together while sewing them.

This is the basic block for the quilt.  I made 24 blocks.

I used Hobbs Tuscany Collection Cotton Wool Blend batting.  This quilts so wonderfully.

I quilted straight lines in all the gray patches, and practiced my free motion quilting with swirls and circles over the rainbow part of the quilt.

I used my new Schmetz needles to quilt.  They work so well with the tightly woven Island Batik fabric.

This quilt is awash in a rainbow of Island Batik color.

Trail Mix helped with the quilting.

You can see all of the colors in this folded side view.  Rainbow!💗💛💚

Flea Market quilt lookin' pretty, folded on a patio chair.  Come on over for some lemonade and a chat.

I used Aurifil thread in matching colors to quilt Flea Market.  This is what I have left.  See that empty spool on the left?  That's yellow 5015.  Over the past year I've used up two spools of this color, and I don't fancy myself that much of a yellow lover.  Hmmmm....I better get some more of that.

The back of the quilt features a pretty Island Batik mushroom print.

I used the same blue fabric for the binding as I used in the outer border.

The Flea Market quilt with some toasty firewood on my front porch.  I'm ready for a sunset or a warm fire.

 Pretty folds.
