My Evil Wizard ~ Halloween and Beyond

My kids have always created their own Halloween costumes.  In 20 years of trick or treating, I think I've only purchased 2 store bought costumes.  This year Trent presented me with this high fashion drawing of his desired look.  It's an evil wizard cloak, dreamt up from a character he created himself, the evil wizard, Leetroy.

He's been eyeing this large roll of red velvet for a long time.  In the past, he's asked me to make a few different things with it, including red velvet curtains with gold trim for his room (No!).

I did not have the perfect pattern to sew this robe, so I altered a similar pattern.  One of the big factors Trent wanted was the triangle shaped sleeves.

He's definitely in character here, looking quite evil.

He also wanted a large cape like collar.  The original pattern had a hood.  This came out pretty well, too.

I also lengthened it, added a couple of buttons to the top as requested, and sewed a large pocket for his wand and candy.

He made his own wand from a piece of wood.

He was able to wear his costume to the annual Halloween festival at the Aycock Rec Center.

And out trick or treating with a friend.  Post Halloween, he's been wearing it around the house quite a bit.  He said it's nice and warm for the chilly Fall days we've been having.  I should be able to get back to sewing my denim skirt soon.  It's looking more like a Spring skirt than a Fall skirt, but I'm sure it will get finished eventually!

Sewing Porch Pillow Project

I have a little screened in porch right off of my sewing room.  It's nice to sit out there and do hand stitching projects.  It's kind of hidden behind my house so no one driving by can see me.  It feels like a special secret place just for me.  I've been working on making it less cluttered and more pleasant to use this year.  As part of that project, I decided my rocking chair needs a new pillow.  I'm using the Pocket Change pattern by Libs Elliott to create my pillow.  This was included in the September Quilty Box.

I absolutely love curvy quilts.  When I saw these fabulous templates in my Quilty Box, I knew I would use them for something.

This is the fabric collection that came with the templates.  It's Greatest Hits Vol. 1, by Libs Elliott, for Andover Fabrics.  Instead of making a multi colored pillow like shown in the quilt pattern, I opted for a two color blue and green palette.  I'm using the blue with the stars all the way over on the lower right, and the blue and green diamond pattern fabric.

The templates were easy to use.  I drew around them with a red Frixion pen.

I carefully cut out my curved pieces.  Here's what a block is going to look like.

When I sew curves, I use a lot of pins.  Remember to sew with the concave piece on top for best results.

I ran out of time for sewing before I finished. I probably had to go cook dinner, or pick up a child from band practice, or something like that. This is how it's looking so far.  I like it.  The pieces are fitting together nicely.  See how the points are coming together?

If you would like to try Quilty Box, click above to visit their site.  It's so much fun to open a box full of quilting goodies each month.   I hope I find some time to finish my pillow soon.  Because it's not a deadline project, I have to fit it in between my other sewing.  When I finish, I'll take some pics on the porch.

B is for Bear Quilting

I thought I would be finished with B is for Bear by now, but my husband was sick, my teenager was sick, and my 9 y.o. was so sick his illness turned into pneumonia.  Now I'm sick, but keeping on as much as I can.  I did complete the quilting on B is for Bear.  I used the above adorable fabric for the backing, as I didn't have a piece of Island Batik that was large enough.  Isn't that the cutest?  Little bears with candy canes?

I used Hobbs Natural Cotton Batting with scrim for this quilt.  So warm and cuddly!

I have a Juki sewing machine mounted on a frame that I haven't used for quite a while.  I decided to get her cleaned and oiled for this project.  Here you can see the quilt top, batting, and backing ready to roll.

I did an allover loopy meander on most of the quilt.

The featured thread is Aurifil, color #2026, a nice light cream color that blends nicely with my quilt top.

Here's a lovely close-up of some of  the Island Batik Clockworks fabrics that are featured in this quilt.

 More loopy-loopies!

Getting there!  This looks like the bottom edge of the quilt.  Yay!

After I finished the loopy meander, I went back and added a few details to the applique parts, like this swirly inside the "o".

I made the binding out of a couple of different brown fabrics from the Clockworks collection.  Isn't this one fabby?

Here I am stitching the binding down.  Getting close to a finish.  Maybe this week if my family can all get healthy again.
