Marvelous Minis Challenge featuring Pixie Garden

This is the quilt I made for the August 2024 Island Batik Ambassador challenge, Pixie Garden.

Disclaimer:  The products used to make this quilt were given to me by Island Batik and Industry Partners.
This month's ambassador challenge was to make a mini quilt!  I love mini quilts.  The quilt size requirements were 24" x 24" or under.  Pixie Garden comes in at 22" x 22".  The blocks are 4" square.

I mostly used fabrics from the 1/2 yard cut bundle that came in my July Island Batik Ambassador box, plus solid black.  These fabrics are basics, blenders, and solids and are available all of the time.

I used my Oliso iron and Heat 'n Bond Lite to create fusible applique pieces for both the tulip blocks and the nine patch blocks.  These pieces were tiny!

I considered just quilting over the fused pieces, but....I decided to secure them on all edges with a small zigzag stitch in matching colors of Aurifil thread.  I think it was worth the extra effort.

Here I am zigzag stitching around the small leaves on the Nine Patch blocks. I used Schmetz Vinyl needles to zigzag stitch all of the applique shapes.  They are non stick and work great for fusible applique projects, as well as for stitching on vinyl.

I put the top together in diagonal rows with Cheddar sashing and orange cornerstones.
I used Hobbs Fusible batting for this quilt.  I did micro grid quilting on the diagonal with Aurifil Monofilament Thread in a clear color.  It was my first time quilting with monofilament thread.  I'm pleased to say it went really well.

The Making of Miss Minnie Sue Pickle

Today I'm sharing the Making of the Miss Minnie Sue Pickle quilt.  I made this quilt as an Island Batik Ambassador challenge and I just love it so very much!  It's one of my favorite quilts.

I chose my fabrics from the above selection.  I love Island Batik fabrics!

I made some templates to cut out the curvy background pieces for each block.  I find it easiest to cut squares of fabric and then lay my templates on the squares to mark and cut the pieces.  See how the corner pattern pieces fit snugly into the corners of my square?  I don't even have to mark those two sides of the patch.  Easy peasy!

The triangle arc sections were paper pieced.  Here they are on my design wall in various stages of piecing, and not yet trimmed.  When you stand back, they look like a lot of eyelashes to me.

After trimming, I sewed the curvy triangle arcs to the outer background patches.

Here are a few of the blocks coming together.

My pink border strips, lovingly labelled by my son, Trent with a flower.

Quilting time!  I quilted a zigzag across the center of each block, and simply outlined the rest of the patches.

 Quilt, quilt, quilt!

The finished quilt, getting a little sunshine during the photo session.

New Pattern! Modern Mini Star Quilt

 Modern Mini Star Quilt

The pattern for the Modern Mini Star Quilt is available now!

Sew a tiny star quilt to add sparkle to your table top or wall.

This quilt is quick and fun to sew.  The tiny center star measures just under 2" square and is paper pieced for easy and accurate handling of the tiny pieces.

The Modern Mini Star quilt's overall dimensions are 20" x 20", perfect for a table topper or to jazz up a small wall space in your home.

I used a variety of Island Batik fabrics to sew the model.

It would make a nice outdoor decoration for a patio party, too. I love the way it brightens up this white wicker settee.

I quilted my model in simple straight lines, 3/4" apart with Aurifil Thread in a beige color.

The backing features another fun Island Batik fabric.

I usually do my binding in a fabric that matches the outer border, but this time I used a gray bubbly print fabric.

Gorgeous outdoor photo. Stars play well in a natural setting.
