A Quilty Fix!

Wshew!  I am so glad I dug up the picture of the quilt top I made for Sally's Mystery Quilt-A-Long.  I was chatting with her this week and decided to start quilting it.  It's halfway loaded onto the quilt frame at the moment.  I completely forgot about that little mistake-y circled in the above photo.  I need to fix that little square before quilting.

Here's a close up of one corner showing the tulips block.  I love the tulips.  They look so happy!

I sewed the backing together on the pink Atlas.  Sew fun!  It's a classic looking blue and white stripe.

Here it is, partly loaded onto the frame.  Again - Wshew!  I'm so glad it didn't get any further.  I'll have to fix that tonight during TV time.  By the way, have you seen Sally's new website?  Here's a link:  Sally's Quilting Corner.  Check it out!  She is available for guild lectures, and there are some great pictures of her work there, too.

In the Pink - Vintage Finds

Just last week Mr. Thomas brought home this wonderful vintage sewing basket.  It's pink - which I love!  The top is wooden, with a pretty flower cut out decoupaged on it.

Here's a peek inside.  See the cute curved spool rack?  It was filled with lots of vintage sewing goodies, too.  Old thread spools, some good, some just for fun.  Needle packs, pins, a handful of little sewing kits, and even a sock darner.  Do you see the old prescription pill bottle on the left?  It's dated 1973, and thankfully filled with pins - no pills!

I love how it matches the pink Atlas Sewing machine.  I've got her all tuned up and have been sewing with this lovely machine lately.

I also found this matching pink metal accessory box on Ebay.  It doesn't look pink in this picture, but it is - really - it's pink!

Here's the front of the Atlas machine.  This has been really fun to sew with.  It makes a terrific straight seam.

And one last find - not pink, but still fun.  It's a pattern box, and filled with old 1960's and 1970's dress patterns.  They are fun to look at.  I should take some photos of them, too.  Included in the patterns is a 1970 pattern for a Burnoose made from a bedspread!  Really cute - now all I need is a 1970's bedspread.

Star Quilt Block of the Month #12 - Cutest Star Ever!

We made it!  This is the last installment of Star Quilt Block of the Month, "Cutest Star Ever!"  It feels good to have finished the last block, but I'm a little sad, too.  This has been an interesting journey.  It has been a lot of fun to see everyone's quilts developing over the past year.   I can't wait to see the finished quilts!

Cutest Star Ever!
(in my humble opinion)

Fabric Requirements:
Lilac
Brown

Please note the fabrics I used are from Robert Kaufman.  Absolutely dreamy fabric to work with.

Cutting:

Lilac:  Cut 12 ea. 1-1/2" squares A
                   Cut 20 ea. 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips B
     Cut 1 ea. 2-1/2" square E

Brown:  Cut 44 ea. 1-1/2" squares A
                     Cut 4 ea. 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips B
                       Cut 2 ea. 3-1/2" x 10-1/2" strips C
                     Cut 2 ea. 3-1/2" x 4-1/2" strips D

Sewing the Block:
(all seams are 1/4")

Step 1:  Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the reverse side of eight of the Lilac 1-1/2" squares A.

Lay 1 Lilac 1-1/2" square A on 1 Brown 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strip B, right sides together with top, bottom, and right edges aligned.  The drawn line should run from the top left center to the lower right corner of the unit.

Sew on the drawn line, from edge to edge.

Flip the Lilac fabric open, press, and trim away the two layers of backing fabric, leaving an approximate 1/4" seam allowance.

Lay a second Lilac 1-1/2" square A face down on the unit with top, bottom, and left edges aligned.  The drawn line should run from the top right center to the lower left corner of the unit.

Sew on the drawn line, from edge to edge.

Flip, press, and trim as before.

The unit should measure 1-1/2" x 2-1/2".

Repeat to sew a total of four flying geese units.

Step 2:  Using 40 of the Brown 1-1/2" squares A and the 20 Lilac 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips B, sew 20 flying geese units in the same manner as Step 1.

Step 3:  Sew two of the flying geese units from Step 1 to opposite sides of the Lilac 2-1/2" square E.

Sew the four remaining Brown 1-1/2" squares A to the ends of the two remaining flying geese units from Step 1.

Sew these three rows together to form the small center star unit.

Step 4:  Sew the two Brown 3-1/2" x 4-1/2" strips D to opposite sides of the center star unit.

Sew one of the Brown 3-1/2" x 10-1/2" strips C to the top of the center star strip.

Sew one of the Brown 3-1/2" x 10-1/2" strips C to the bottom of the center star strip.

Step 5:  Sew the flying geese units from Step 2 into four strips of five each.

Sew two of these strips to opposite sides of the block.

Sew a Lilac 1-1/2" square A to each end of the remaining two strips.

Sew one strip to the bottom of the block.

Sew one strip to the top of the block.

Smile!

Here are my twelve star blocks.  If you sew any of the blocks, please share with the Quilters Show and Tell group.  I hope you get creative and put your blocks together.  However, if you would like some setting suggestions, I hope to wrap up this BOM series with some ideas next month.

Quilty Stitches Update

I've stitched away a few more lovely Summer evenings on my front porch.  The two younger boys are busy playing in the yard with trucks, construction vehicles, wagons, and shovels.  The gladiolas, lilies, and roses with their delicious scents bloom all around us like a pink cloud.  The fireflies start their nightly light show as the sun sets through the trees across the street.  Ahh....Summer!

I've completed two more blocks since my last post.  This one is Japanese X, also known as Spool Block.

This block is Economy.

Here's my sampler to date.  Only one more row to stitch.  It's not too late to join in.  Here's a link to the Stitch-A-Long:  Quilty Stitches.  Thank you, Corey (Little Miss Shabby) for this fun sampler to stitch away the lazy Summer evenings.

Please be sure to stop by tomorrow for the last installment in the Star Block of the Month tutorial series.

Quilty Stitches Playful Petals Block

Here's a little peeky at my Playful Petals block for the Quilty Stitches Stitch-A-Long.  Isn't this one just so cute?  I love it. As you can see, I'm still filling in the white background.  Adorable!  Here's a link to the Little Miss Shabby blog post with this pattern, if you want to stitch-a-long too.  Playful Petals Block.
