Starstruck featuring Kosmo's Comets

Disclaimer:  The fabrics, thread, and batting used in this project were generously supplied by Island Batik at no cost to me.
Meet my latest quilt, Kosmo's Comets. I didn't quite get the contrasts right on this one.  You have to look closely to see the friendship stars in the center of the blocks.  But, I thoroughly enjoyed making this quilt and I love it, even though it didn't come out the way I had it planned visually.

Kosmo's Comets is my September challenge quilt for Island Batik Ambassadors.  This month's theme is Starstruck.  The quilt can be any size, as long as a star theme is incorporated into the design.

I used the Globetrotter collection once again.  If you remember, I used Globetrotter in last month's Wishing Star quilt, too.  I added a couple of dark fabrics from my second Island Batik box ~ a solid black and a deep, dark blue.

Here's a close-up of one block.  Now you can see the star.  I paper pieced four sections and then sewed them around the center square to create the blocks.

The design takes on a completely different look from this angle.

I quilted Kosmo's Comets with Hobbs Thermore batting.

Oh kitty!  This quilt has a nice Autumn feeling to it.  I like the way my camera picked up the thread behind the heart cutout in this photo.  This is Kosmo's Comets posing with a thread cabinet in my sewing studio.

I used Aurifil thread in both a bright yellow and a dark dramatic blue for the straight line quilting.  I'm still having a renewed love affair with my walking foot.  We're "reunited, and it feels so good...."  Do you remember that popular song from the 1970's?  I remember it being so popular that they played it over the loudspeaker during the morning announcements at school.

I used a non Island Batik fabric for the back of the quilt, but I'm going to show it a bit so you can see the fun I had with my walking foot.  It really stands out against the orange backing fabric.

I bound the edges of this quilt with the same sunshiny yellow fabric as I used for the center of the stars.  Such a happy little fabric.

Island Batik's Globetrotter collection looks gorgeous sewn all together.  I'm going to enjoy displaying this quilt on the wall next to my kitchen table for a while.

This quilt is Fuzzy approved, and ready for Fall.

Quilt Stats:
Quilt Size:  26" x 34"
Block Size:  8" x 8"
Fabric:  Globetrotter by Island Batik
Batting:  Thermore by Hobbs
Thread:  Aurifil

Kosmo's Comets ~ Starstruck Part One

Disclaimer:  The fabrics used in this post were generously provided by Island Batik.
This month's Island Batik Ambassador challenge is Starstruck.  I'm working with the Globetrotter fabric collection again.  So gorgeous!  This color palette is really growing on me.

Funnily enough, I made a star quilt for last month's challenge.  I love star quilts.  There seems to be endless variety and variations that can be created with stars.  This month I'm sewing another star quilt, but paper piecing it.

I'm sewing 24 of these sections, 24 of another section, and adding some bright yellow squares into the mix.  It doesn't look like a star yet, does it?  I'll reveal the entire Kosmo's Comets quilt later in the month.  Now back to sewing...

The Great Outdoors Blog Hop featuring Globetrotter and The Wishing Star

Disclaimer:  The fabrics, thread, and batting for this project were provided to me at no cost by Island Batik, Aurifil, and Hobbs.
Hello!  Welcome to my little corner of the Great Outdoors Blog Hop. This is the Island Batik Ambassador's challenge for the month of August.  We finally got to use our "surprise" bundle of fabrics.
 I received the Globetrotter collection.

Love these colors and designs!  It makes me want to pack my bags and see the great outdoors all around the world...sigh!  At least I can dream, can't I?

Here's my quilt, The Wishing Star.  You may recognize my pattern from a previous issue of Easy Quilts back in 2015.  I used every fabric from the Globetrotter collection in my quilt, along with a white Island Batik fabric for the background.

I randomly cut and pieced together the star blocks.  Originally I thought I would only use the lighter fabrics for the star centers, but I like this arrangement better.  The stars with the light points look like they are twinkling.

 Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

When I hear the phrase, "The Great Outdoors" I can't help but think of the 1980's classic comedy movie with John Candy and Dan Akroyd.  This is one of my husband's all time favorite movies.  He even had it on in the delivery room when I had my third son...seriously.  My favorite scene is shown above, when they discover a bat in their cabin and put on these ridiculous outfits to catch the bat.  I've had a few bat experiences in my house, so I can relate.

I considered designing a bat quilt to go with the theme, but settled on The Wishing Star instead.  There's nothing quite like a summer night sky full of sparkly stars.

This little star is so sweet.

I took a few photos of my quilt with this old truck my husband recently acquired.  It would be fun to take this quilt to a tailgating party.

 Or a summer evening picnic.

I quilted The Wishing Star in straight lines, 1" apart, diagonally out from the center of the center star.

I used the big cone of white Aurifil thread from box 1.

And the Hobbs Heirloom Natural Cotton Batting from box 2.

The Aurifil thread, Hobbs batting, and Island Batik fabrics quilted beautifully together.

I bound the edges using fabric that matched the outer border of the quilt.

The Wishing Star quilt looks nice hanging over the door of my quilt cabinet.  I think I'll let it stay here for a while.

Now for giveaway time.  I'm giving away 5" squares cut from my leftover Globetrotter collection fabrics.  One of each fabric for you to sample and inspire you.  Plus...

One copy of my Modern Mini Star quilt pattern.  To enter, scroll down and leave a comment below.  Let's make it interesting...If you could travel anywhere your heart desires, where would you go?  I'll select a winner by random number drawing.

The Wishing Star ~ August Challenge Part One

Disclaimer: These fabrics were given to me by Island Batik.
This is part one of my August Challenge for Island Batik Ambassadors.  This month we get to reveal our "Surprise" fabrics from box one!  I received the Globetrotter collection.  This is the rep sample I made earlier in the year that will eventually be serving as a kennel quilt in an animal shelter.  It shows all of the fabrics in the new Globetrotter collection.

These are such vibrant fabrics that I felt they needed to be paired with a bright white fabric to really show them off.  I'm sewing sparkly star blocks with the Globetrotter collection.  I decided to cut and piece the fabrics randomly to give the stars a fun playful look.  I think the points made from the lighter fabrics make the stars look like they are twinkling.  I sewed thirteen of these large star blocks.  Shine on!

I made my star points using the cut and flip method.  I marked my random squares with a diagonal line across the back.

I paired them with white strips of the background fabric and sewed right on the line.

I clipped away the corners, leaving myself with a pile of small triangles to make into something else.  Maybe a mini quilt.....hmmmmm......

Here are some of my points at the halfway mark.

As I piece a quilt, I like to put the parts up on my design wall and take photos for future inspiration.  I like the way these diamonds look in the middle ~ cool!

The quilt I am making features three different star blocks.  This is the second block.  Isn't it cute?  What a cute little star!  I'm sewing the block threes now.  I'll reveal the entire quilt on my blog hop day, August 27th.

The Great Outdoors Blog hop is going on now!  Here's today's blog tour stops:

Be sure to come back and visit my blog on August 27th to see my completed star quilt, plus a giveaway!
