Skipping Stones Quilt ~ A Quilty Box Project

I started a new project!

Disclaimer:  The products used in this post were given to me by Quilty Box.
Ragamuffin is SEW excited!

I'm making the Skipping Stones quilt from the November 2020 Bundles of Inspiration magazine in Quilty Box.

This quilt design is by Natalie Barnes.  I'm using her Norma Rose fabrics that were also included in Quilty Box (top fabric in photo), plus a bunch of random neutral fabrics from my stash (bottom fabric in photo).

I was able to use my Accuquilt 8" Qube to cut out some of the pieces.  This made the cutting part of the quilt go super fast.

There are two sizes of HST's (half square triangles) in this quilt.  I used Jackie Kunkel's 4-1/2" Square from another Quilty Box to square up my blocks.  It worked really well.

Just one afternoon of sewing and I had everything cut out.

All of the half square triangles have been sewn and trimmed.

Sew cute small HS triangles before trimming.

My design wall with large and small HST units.

I even had time to begin sewing some of my HST's into blocks.  Woo-Hoo!  This quilt is moving right along.  I can't wait to finish sewing the blocks in my next step.

Windy Mills Progress

I was able to squeeze in another sewing session for the Windy Mills quilt.  Isn't this block pretty?  It's a traditional block known as Louisiana.

Disclaimer:  Some of the fabrics used in this post were given to me by Quilty Box.
Here's how it looks when you put them together.  So cool!  I love the secondary pattern.

These are the blocks I completed this time around.  Eight more to add to the nine I made last time.  Seventeen blocks so far.  These blocks are going to finish at 8" square.  I'm unsure of how many I'm going to sew at this time.  I have a lot coming up on my sewing schedule in the New Year, but I hope I'll be able to make more of these soon.  I hope you have some time to sew today.

Sunflower Medallion Quilt

This is the Sunflower Medallion quilt.  It's the largest quilt I've made in a long time.  At 68" x 76" it's certainly not the biggest quilt I've ever sewn, but it is big enough that I had to take this photo of it sideways on my clothesline.

Medallion Quilts is the last Island Batik Ambassador challenge for 2020.  It's been a crazy year overall, but still a fabulous year for quilting.  I'm so honored to be a part of this group of prolific and inspiring quilt makers.

William gave his quilty approval.

I used this Lemon Grass 10" squares pack, plus some blenders, solids, and stash builders for my quilt.  I cut as many pieces as I could with my Accuquilt Go, and also used Hobbs Cotton Batting, Schmetz Needles, and Aurifil Thread for both the piecing and the quilting.

I've always admired medallion quilts, but never actually made one.  I designed this large Sunflower Dresden and Applique block for the center.  This was also my first time sewing a Dresden.  It's not perfect, but I enjoyed it and would do it again.  I quilted loops and straight lines in the flower petals and pebbles in the center part of the flower with a gold Aurifil thread, #2134.

I quilted the rest of the quilt in the same gold Aurifil thread in an allover loopy meander.

When I finish quilting, I go back and weave in all my thread ends at one time.  While doing that on the Sunflower Medallion quilt, I felt something hard inside my quilt.  It turned out to be this tiny screw!  I had to unsew one of the seams and pull it out with a tweezer.  I have no idea how the screw got into my quilt or where it came from.  I hope it didn't somehow fall out of my sewing machine.

I backed this quilt with a lovely light yellow Island Batik fabric, Parchment.

I bound my quilt with a few different blue fabrics from a stash builders roll.

I had fun sewing this quilt and I'm ready to snuggle under it with one of my cats tonight.
