City Placemats Island Batik Ambassador Challenge

The Island Batik Ambassador challenge for January was Placemats.  I designed and made these City Placemats.

The challenge was to make placemats, sized 12" x 18" or larger.  Mine are the smallest size.  As you can see, they cover up most of my tiny kitchen table.

I chose the Melody fabric collection by Claudia Pfeil.  I received this 10" square stack in my first Island Batik Ambassador shipment for 2021.  To see all the goodies I received in my boxes, come back on January 27th.  My unboxing video will be posted at 11 a.m. EST.

Disclaimer:  The products used in this project were given to me by Island Batik and industry partners.
My original idea for these placemats was to sew the design together in all one piece, quilt it on my frame and then cut it into four pieces for the individual placemats.  I had another quilt on the frame at the time, so I opted instead to sew them into four pieces and then quilt them with straight line quilting on my Janome Memory Craft.

To quilt, I used a brand new Schmetz needle (yay!), Aurifil thread in 40 wt, color 2315, and Hobbs Fusible Batting.  I cut my binding strips with my Accuquilt Go 2" strip die from the same light green fabric I used for the back of my placemats.

The light green backing fabric nearly matches the color of my shabby old kitchen table.

They certainly dress it up!  You can lay the four placemats together to get this fun optical illusion design.

I took them outside to see how they would look on my patio table.  We eat a lot of meals outdoors in the summertime under the trees and patio umbrella.  It's so peaceful.

I like how the four placemats are all a little bit different from each other through the color placement.  This is my favorite.  I love the pinks and purples.  This is perfect for my kitchen.  I'm slowly working on a pink lemonade/limeade look for my kitchen.  The City Placemats fit right in.

Have you seen the placemats made by the other Island Batik Ambassadors?  There's so much juicy creativity flowing around this new group!  Be sure to follow and visit all of the designers for maximum batik quilting inspiration.  Here's the list:

  1. So pretty! I love the colors and they do look great against your table. It's fun that they are all just a tad different but clearly go together.
