May Make it Modern with Hobbs featuring Blown Away

Introducing the Blown Away quilt ~ living free and in the wild.

Blown Away is my Island Batik Ambassadors challenge quilt for May Make it Modern with Hobbs.

The challenge was to create a modern quilt as defined by:  "the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, alternate grid work."

I chose these three fabrics from my Island Batik fabric collection, a yellow floral batik, a purple abstract batik, and a solid gray fabric for my project.

This is a close up of the pinwheel block in the lower right corner.  This area of my quilt had the heaviest quilting.

I used Hobbs Thermore batting.  This batting is especially designed for quilted clothing, but I've used it in several quilts, and it's fast becoming one of my favorites.  It's thin and so easy to work with.

Pinwheels spinning away in the wind on a blustery day.

I took the Pinwheel block from this Accuquilt book, and expanded it to flow across the quilt like it was "blowing away" on a windy day.

 Lovely folds of quilty goodness.

I used these perfectly matching Aurifil threads to quilt the Blown Away quilt.

I used the quilting lines to accentuate the movement and scale of the quilt.  I used the yellow thread over the yellow fabric and flowing into the gray area.  I did the same with the purple, letting it flow all the way across and into the borders.  I quilted a presser foot's width apart for the small block, then one inch apart for the medium size blocks, then one and a half inches apart for the large scale blocks.

I used the purple fabric for the binding.

More pretty folds of quilty goodness.
