Brother 220 Super Streamliner Pink Sewing Machine and Shoes!

My thrift shop finds for the week - A Pink Brother 220 Super Streamliner sewing machine, with matching pink shoes!  I'll look so stylish while sewing.  I suppose I need to sew up a pink polka dotted dress to complete the ensemble.

This machine clearly hadn't been run for quite some time.  It had minimal lint, but needed a lot of SMO (sewing machine oil).  I got it up and running, but the motor is sparking a little.  My husband got involved, and took the motor apart, but didn't resolve the problem.  From reading online, the sparks may go away after running the machine for a while, or they might not.  I could replace the motor with another one.  I'm sure I could find one in my machine collection, but....it wouldn't be pink.  What would you do?  Please leave a comment below.

Have a wonderful day!

  1. I would use it to see if the sparks go away. I don't know anything about sewing machine motors but is there some way the pink cover could still be used just on a new motor. That is such a great find.

    1. Judy, Thank you for your comment! I have no prior experience with sewing machine motor problems. I'll have to ask my husband if the motor can be replaced and just keep the cover. Interesting idea.

  2. Hi Jennifer, I am not a 'pink' person but I love you pink finds. You mentioned you might have another motor that could fit. If so, would it be possible to swap the housings? If the windings are the problem the cover would have to be removed to repair the motor - if that is possible. Other suggestion is to paint 2nd motor pink to match. A tiny sample pot would be enough to do the trick. Just make sure there is no oil or grease on any of the surface to be painted. Use methylated spirits or paint thinners or similar. Be careful not to get any moisture in the workings as you could have a 2nd motor sparking & be back at square one. The only other idea I have is to send an email or facebook message to Bonnie Hunter - Queen of old sewing machines - she may have an expert solution for you. The Pink Lady Boy will look good on the shelf with her matching shoes even if she won't stitch again. Good luck.

    1. Hello Pam - Thank you for all the suggestions, and especially the tips for painting. I've never attempted to paint anything of this sort. Bonnie does have a lovely collection of VSM's! I love when she posts pictures of them. Have a wonderful day!
