Sunflower Medallion Cutting

The Island Batik Ambassadors December challenge is Medallion quilts.  I've designed a new quilt, Sunflower Medallion for this project.  This is the last Island Batik Ambassador challenge for 2020.  

I'm cutting out the pieces from my stash, rather than from a particular collection.  This quilt will have a lot of blues, yellows, and orange.

As I cut out my pieces, I label each by color, size, shape, and identification letter.  They get sorted into little zipper bags for organization and easy access whilst sewing.

I pulled some of my fabric from these Island Batik stash builders rolls.  They are 5" x width of fabric strips and are so helpful when you are looking for just the right color. I see the perfect red orange peeking out at me in one of these rolls.

My Janome Memory Craft often becomes a fabric stand as I'm cutting.

  

And as usual, I'm cutting as many pieces as I can with my Accuquilt Go.  This is the 2-1/2" square die.  You can cut out 54 squares at a time with this die.  It's so fast!

This lovely orange fabric is called Pumpkin.  Isn't it gorgeous?  It's so ~ orangey.

Here I am cutting the Pumpkin fabric with one of my strip dies.  I have strip dies for 1-1/2", 2", and 2-1/2" widths.  They're so versatile.  You can cut across the whole width of fabric and get perfectly straight strips every time.  Then you can use them as is, or cut into smaller bits.  Definitely my most used Accuquilt dies.

I cut these strips into smaller strips.  So quick and easy.

I also changed my rotary blade before I started cutting this project.  There's nothing quite like a new blade.  It seems like I never notice how dull my blade is until I put on a new one.  I've been trying to change my blade once a month.  It's so nice to be able to cut easily and cleanly every time.  This is a big project.  I wasn't able to cut all the pieces out in one session.  Hopefully two will do it and then I can begin piecing.  How do you approach cutting out a new quilt?  Do you cut all the pieces at once, or a do a little as you sew along?  Do you have a die cutter, rotary cutter, or use templates?  Please leave a comment below.

Windy Mills Sewing Blocks

Did you see my post yesterday about cutting out the pieces for this quilt?  If you missed it, you can read it right here:  Cutting Windy Mills.  Moving right along, the first thing to sew on this project is these Flying Geese units.

More progress shows lots of Flying Geese units, plus some of the next step, sewing the units to white strips.

This is my first finished block!  So pretty.  I like it.  What do you think?

I completed nine of the Windy Mills blocks in one sewing session.  I like the way they look set together in this straight setting arrangement.  Time to sew some more.  What are you working on today?

Windy Mills Cutting

I'm cutting out a new quilt for my Etsy shop.  This one will feature a Windmill looking block, so I'm tentatively calling it Windy Mills, but the name could change.

I'm using fabric from Guicy Guice's new collection, plus some coordinates from my stash.  Isn't this one groovy?

All the pieces for this quilt are being cut with my Accuquilt Go and 8" Qube Set.

This is a hand-dyed fabric from my stash.  Super pretty.  I love the way the colors flow together.

 This fabric also came out of my stash.  Here you can see it cut into strips, prepping to run it through the Accuquilt Go die cutter.  I'm excited to see how this quilt progresses. Front Porch Sittin' ~ Part Two

Front Porch Sittin', part two.  I cut the blue and purple fabrics from the Island Batik Urbanization collection by Kathy Engle into strips of varying widths.

I then sewed the strips together into sections, using the values to create areas of light and darkness.

Two sections of strips, up on my design wall.  There will be one more section that goes at the top of the quilt.

After I completed sewing the strips together, I arranged the fusible flowers that I cut in Front Porch Sittin' ~ Part One over the strip background, fused them in place, and secured the edges with a small zigzag stitch in matching Aurifil threads.  Next up ~ Thread Painting/Quilting.  We're getting close to the final reveal.

Here a Hexie, There a Hexie

 This week I pulled out my Accuquilt Go and did some taming of the scrap bin.

 I like to cut my scraps into hexagons.  I use the smallest size on the Accuquilt Hexagon die.

 I do all the basting prep work while watching TV or front porch sitting.

Then, the hexagons are sorted by color and put into zipper bags or, a cross stitch floss box.  

This is Aura, the first hexagon quilt I've completed.

I'm working on The Rainbow Connection, a completely improv quilt.

I have some more ideas in my head for other hexagon quilts.  I may begin another one before finishing The Rainbow Connection.  We'll see...
