Whimsical and Wonky featuring Wonky Little Houses

Disclaimer:  The products in this post were given to me at no cost by Island Batik and Quilty Box.
Won't you be my neighbor?  This is the quilt I made for the December Island Batik Ambassadors challenge.

This month's challenge was Whimsical and Wonky.  This was a tough one for me.  I like to be playful with colors and fabric, but most of my designs have a lot of structure.

My quilt features Island Batik fabrics from the Paisley Dot collection and Check it Out, plus a few scraps from my stash.  I used Check it out for the sky and the backing, too.

Here's a closer look at the center house block.  I used Carrie Bloomston's Wonky Little Houses pattern from the October 2018 Quilty Box.  Her pattern is super simple, featuring the three houses I made.  She encourages you to add other elements to your quilt to personalize it.  I added lace trim and button doorknobs to each house.

At this point, I felt like the brightly colored wonky houses looked a lot like a child's drawing.  So I created a fun tree in the same style and put a sunny yellow circle up in the sky to be the sun, moon, or a planet ~ use your imagination.

I used Hobbs Heirloom Cotton Batting and Aurifil threads in matching colors to quilt my street scene.

It looks cute on my front porch glider.  When the weather is nice, I do a lot of my hand sewing here.

Here is a closer look at the quilting.  I quilted straight lines into the houses to look like wood siding.

I did some fun echo quilting around the sun and the tree in the sky.  Everything was quilted with my walking foot.  The yellow Paisley Dot fabric makes a wonderful sun (or moon, or planet)!

I cut 10" strips of turquoise and aqua green Paisley Dot fabrics and randomly sewed them together to make the binding.

I really love the way this quilt turned out.  It's adorable!

I'm not sure what I am going to do with this quilt, but it would make a fun children's play mat.  Imagination...I think a lot of stories could start out with this sweet collection of homes.

2018 has been a fabulous year as an Island Batik Ambassador - I've loved every minute of it!  I have one more project to sew for the big year ending blog hop.  My hop day is January 21st.  I'd better get sewing!  The hop starts soon.  Be on the lookout for a bevy of inspiration with the Island Batik Ambassadors, coming your way!

What's Inside the November 2018 Quilty Box?

Keep your paws off my Quilty Box!
What's inside the November 2018 Quilty Box?  If Trail Mix has her way, we'll never know.   This Quilty Box was provided to me at no cost by Quilty Box for promotional purposes.  Thank you, Quilty Box!

Oh wow!  Look at this month's gorgeous surprises!

This month's featured designer is Tula Pink.  Read an in depth interview with her inside this month's Bundles of Inspiration magazine.

Tula Pink's Zuma fabric bundle is this month's fabric.  I'm loving these gorgeous blues and greens.

Here's a better look at the eight fat quarters included in this fabric collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics.

We get to make this cute Clam Up bag this month.  Soft and Stable, a sort of batting/interfacing for bags is also inside this month's box.  These would make nice Christmas gifts.

A blue zipper for the bag, plus a zipper color chart.  I just love looking at all the colors the zipper is available in.  The Clam Up pattern, Soft and Stable, and Double-Slide Zipper are all by Annies.

Last but not least is this coordinating blue Aurifil thread.  I've really enjoyed getting a new thread in my Quilty Box every month.  It's fun to have so many different threads to play with.

My Turn the Corner quilt is home and Kit Kat has laid claim to it.  It's the perfect time of year to have a pretty throw quilt on the couch for chilly evenings. Oh kitty!

Here's another look at the whole quilt if you missed it in my previous post.  You can read more about this quilt here:  Turn the Corner Quilt

The pattern for the Turn the Corner quilt appears in the Winter 2019 issue of Easy Quilts.

Cozy Cabins featuring the Log Cabin Star Quilt

Disclaimer:  The fabrics, batting, and thread featured in this post were provided by Island Batik at no cost to me.
Hello!  This month's Island Batik Ambassador's challenge is Cozy Cabins.  I made this quilt, Log Cabin Star, based on a block I designed a few years ago, Shadow Star.  You can learn how to sew a 12" Shadow Star block in this tutorial from 2013:  Star Quilt BOM #3 ~ Shadow Star

The challenge was to make a log cabin style quilt that was at least 36" x 36".

Most of my fabrics came from the London Fog collection.  I thought the 2-1/2" strips would lend themselves nicely to making a log cabin quilt....but when I added in the star element my blocks came out too large and I didn't have enough fabric for the whole quilt.  So, I cut the strips for the quilt in half lengthwise to sew 8" x 8" Log Cabin Star blocks.

This photo shows the four center blocks, the diamond quilting beginning in the center, and a little peek of the backing fabric.

A close-up of the Log Cabin Star block.

This quilt is made up of sixteen blocks.

This photo gives a closer look at the London Fog fabrics.  Aren't they just gorgeous?  I love blues.  I seem to have more blues in my stash than any other color.

Fun photo on my front steps.  Because it's halfway between Halloween and Christmas you can see Santa's boot on the left and some Pumpkins on the right.

Another look at the quilting.  I'm still having a blast playing with my walking foot.

Here's the white Aurifil thread I used to quilt the Log Cabin Star quilt.  My thread stand has a flower my parents sent me from Hawaii. I like to have happy things around me while I sew.

I used the last little bit of the Hobbs Cotton Batting on this quilt.  The combination of the Aurifil thread and the Hobbs batting quilt beautifully together.

A closer look at the green backing fabric.  I had this left over from another project.

I bound this quilt using a combination of light blue fabrics.  They blend together so well you don't even notice unless you look closely.

A pretty fold.

Because this is a log cabin quilt, I took a couple of glamour shots with my wood stove.  It makes me think of a log cabin ~ rustic and warm.

Here's another angle.  There's no fire going at the moment, but it will be in the 20's tonight.  We'll be using it this evening for sure.  I'll be sitting by the wood stove, under a quilt, cutting out 288 Island Batik fabric circles for another upcoming project.
