Sewing Porch Pillow Project

I have a little screened in porch right off of my sewing room.  It's nice to sit out there and do hand stitching projects.  It's kind of hidden behind my house so no one driving by can see me.  It feels like a special secret place just for me.  I've been working on making it less cluttered and more pleasant to use this year.  As part of that project, I decided my rocking chair needs a new pillow.  I'm using the Pocket Change pattern by Libs Elliott to create my pillow.  This was included in the September Quilty Box.

I absolutely love curvy quilts.  When I saw these fabulous templates in my Quilty Box, I knew I would use them for something.

This is the fabric collection that came with the templates.  It's Greatest Hits Vol. 1, by Libs Elliott, for Andover Fabrics.  Instead of making a multi colored pillow like shown in the quilt pattern, I opted for a two color blue and green palette.  I'm using the blue with the stars all the way over on the lower right, and the blue and green diamond pattern fabric.

The templates were easy to use.  I drew around them with a red Frixion pen.

I carefully cut out my curved pieces.  Here's what a block is going to look like.

When I sew curves, I use a lot of pins.  Remember to sew with the concave piece on top for best results.

I ran out of time for sewing before I finished. I probably had to go cook dinner, or pick up a child from band practice, or something like that. This is how it's looking so far.  I like it.  The pieces are fitting together nicely.  See how the points are coming together?

The Making of the Strawberry Rose Quilt

(Note:  The materials for this quilt were given to my by Island Batik at no cost to me.)

The Strawberry Rose quilt looks right at home, hanging on our greenhouse.

Here's another glamour shot ~ hanging out on the front porch on a sunny afternoon.

This seems like a fitting place for this vintage style quilt.

Even though this quilt did not have a lot of similar pieces, I still bagged and labeled them.  It's my system and it works well for me.  This helps to keep everything clean and organized.

The blocks came together quickly.  I used Heat 'N Bond Lite for my fusible applique.

I zigzag stitched with matching Aurifil thread around all of my fused patches to secure them.

Here's one block completed.  Don't the Island Batik fabrics look vibrant?  I love the versatility of batik fabrics.  They work well in every style of quilt.

Here's the top before quilting.  See the lower left corner?  It didn't come together the way I wanted it to.  I considered unsewing and resetting that patch, or adding some buttons or yo-yo's to disguise it, but in the end I ran short on time and just left it.  I'm not trying to win a prize, and I'll just say it's imperfection is "charm".

I straight line quilted this on a diagonal out from the center using my hopefully never ending cone of white Aurifil thread.

I didn't do any quilting on or around the applique patches.  When I reached the appliques, I simply ended my thread with a machine knot and continued my line of quilting on the other side of the rose.

As the Crow Flies Homecoming

My As the Crow Flies table topper is home and ready for some turkey action!

Mr. Turkey seems a little bit alarmed.  Lucky him, he's stuffed.

Here is a close up look at a corner of this quilt.  You can see a bit of the fun I had quilting this one with a variety of motifs.  The fabrics are so cute, too.  Flowers, squirrels, pumpkins....oh yes!

This is an outdoor clothesline photo of As the Crow Flies.  You can see a lot of the quilting in this pic, too.  I will be using this quilt as part of my Thanksgiving table setting this year.  Here in North Carolina it is sometimes warm enough to have an outdoor Thanksgiving, but it doesn't look like we are going to have that treat this year.

If you would like to sew your very own As the Crow Flies quilt, the pattern is in the November/December 2018 issue of Quilty magazine.

As the Crow Flies Table Topper

Today I'm showing the As the Crow Flies table topper.  This is a quick, easy to sew quilt, just perfect to whip up in time for your Thanksgiving feast.  The pattern for the As the Crow Flies table topper appears in the November/December 2018 issue of Quilty magazine

I worked with this gorgeous color palette provided to me by Riley Blake Fabrics.  This is the Calico Crow collection by Lauren Nash.  These autumn themed fabrics have squirrels, pumpkins, crows, and more ~ so cute!

This quilt features a nine patch off center block and has a woven feel to it created by the placement of fabrics surrounding the nine patch's red border.  The pattern incorporates strip piecing techniques for fast construction.

The 35" x 23" size fits just right on my kitchen table.  This would also look terrific dressing up a buffet for your holiday feast.  This versatile design could easily be made in other color schemes to coordinate with your decor.  Just remember to keep the values and fabric placement the same for a similar look.

I played with a variety of quilting motifs on this quilt.  I quilted a feather flowing out of the lower left corner and up two edges.  I also quilted double circles in the both of the red borders.

I quilted a different design in each stripe, just for fun.
I love the way the Warm and Natural batting by The Warm Company quilts.  It gives a nice weight to my project, too.  Not too light, not too heavy, just right.

You can see shadows from the front of the quilt with the sun shining through, but I did want to show the backing fabric because it's soooooo cute!  It's all pumpkin pie style recipes and vintage food advertisements.  Love this fabric!

 Quilt Stats:

Finished quilt size:  35" x 23"
Block size:  6" x 6"
Fabric:  Calico Crow by Lauren Nash for Riley Blake
Batting:  Warm and Natural by the Warm Company
Thread:  King Tut by Superior Threads

If you would like to make your own As the Crow Flies quilt, the pattern appears in the November/December 2018 issue of Quilty magazine.  This should be available at your local quilt shop now.
