We made it! This is the last installment of Star Quilt Block of the Month, "Cutest Star Ever!" It feels good to have finished the last block, but I'm a little sad, too. This has been an interesting journey. It has been a lot of fun to see everyone's quilts developing over the past year. I can't wait to see the finished quilts!
Cutest Star Ever!
(in my humble opinion)
Fabric Requirements:
Lilac
Brown
Please note the fabrics I used are from Robert Kaufman. Absolutely dreamy fabric to work with.
Cutting:
Lilac: Cut 12 ea. 1-1/2" squares A
Cut 20 ea. 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips B
Cut 1 ea. 2-1/2" square E
Brown: Cut 44 ea. 1-1/2" squares A
Cut 4 ea. 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips B
Cut 2 ea. 3-1/2" x 10-1/2" strips C
Cut 2 ea. 3-1/2" x 4-1/2" strips D
Sewing the Block:
(all seams are 1/4")
Step 1: Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the reverse side of eight of the Lilac 1-1/2" squares A.
Lay 1 Lilac 1-1/2" square A on 1 Brown 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strip B, right sides together with top, bottom, and right edges aligned. The drawn line should run from the top left center to the lower right corner of the unit.
Sew on the drawn line, from edge to edge.
Flip the Lilac fabric open, press, and trim away the two layers of backing fabric, leaving an approximate 1/4" seam allowance.
Lay a second Lilac 1-1/2" square A face down on the unit with top, bottom, and left edges aligned. The drawn line should run from the top right center to the lower left corner of the unit.
Sew on the drawn line, from edge to edge.
Flip, press, and trim as before.
The unit should measure 1-1/2" x 2-1/2".
Repeat to sew a total of four flying geese units.
Step 2: Using 40 of the Brown 1-1/2" squares A and the 20 Lilac 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips B, sew 20 flying geese units in the same manner as Step 1.
Step 3: Sew two of the flying geese units from Step 1 to opposite sides of the Lilac 2-1/2" square E.
Sew the four remaining Brown 1-1/2" squares A to the ends of the two remaining flying geese units from Step 1.
Sew these three rows together to form the small center star unit.
Step 4: Sew the two Brown 3-1/2" x 4-1/2" strips D to opposite sides of the center star unit.
Sew one of the Brown 3-1/2" x 10-1/2" strips C to the top of the center star strip.
Sew one of the Brown 3-1/2" x 10-1/2" strips C to the bottom of the center star strip.
Step 5: Sew the flying geese units from Step 2 into four strips of five each.
Sew two of these strips to opposite sides of the block.
Sew a Lilac 1-1/2" square A to each end of the remaining two strips.
Sew one strip to the bottom of the block.
Sew one strip to the top of the block.
Smile!
