Winds of Autumn Quilt Homecoming

 The Winds of Autumn quilt is back home from Love of Quilting.  I'm using it on my bed because it's so cuddly warm.  I just love the soft antique look these fabrics give this quilt.  It's wonderful for the cold rainy November weather we've been experiencing here.

 I take a lot of photos while I'm working on a quilt.  I thought I'd share a few of them in this post.  It's interesting to see what goes into each project.  I like to put the pieces of my blocks up on the design wall and snap photos.  Sometimes this leads to new design ideas for future quilts.

 These simple strips laid out together show some fun pattern and color play ideas.

 In this photo you can see the blocks coming together into on-point rows.  I use the on-point setting in a lot of my quilts.  

 Time to sew the borders.  I cut out all the pieces for my quilts before I begin sewing.  I sort them into zipper sandwich size baggies and label them with the color, size, and piece name or letter.

 Here the Winds of Autumn quilt is coming off the quilting frame.  This is when I check for any loose thread ends and weave them back into the quilt sandwich.

As the Crow Flies Table Topper

 Today I'm showing the As the Crow Flies table topper.  This is a quick, easy to sew quilt, just perfect to whip up in time for your Thanksgiving feast.  The pattern for the As the Crow Flies table topper appears in the November/December 2018 issue of Quilty magazine

 I worked with this gorgeous color palette provided to me by Riley Blake Fabrics.  This is the Calico Crow collection by Lauren Nash.  These autumn themed fabrics have squirrels, pumpkins, crows, and more ~ so cute!

 This quilt features a nine patch off center block and has a woven feel to it created by the placement of fabrics surrounding the nine patch's red border.  The pattern incorporates strip piecing techniques for fast construction.

 The 35" x 23" size fits just right on my kitchen table.  This would also look terrific dressing up a buffet for your holiday feast.  This versatile design could easily be made in other color schemes to coordinate with your decor.  Just remember to keep the values and fabric placement the same for a similar look.

 I played with a variety of quilting motifs on this quilt.  I quilted a feather flowing out of the lower left corner and up two edges.  I also quilted double circles in the both of the red borders.

 I quilted a different design in each stripe, just for fun.

I love the way the Warm and Natural batting by The Warm Company quilts.  It gives a nice weight to my project, too.  Not too light, not too heavy, just right.

 You can see shadows from the front of the quilt with the sun shining through, but I did want to show the backing fabric because it's soooooo cute!  It's all pumpkin pie style recipes and vintage food advertisements.  Love this fabric!

Love, Love, Love....

 Love, love, love...here's another project I'm working on for a pattern re-release.  

 This quilt features a bevy of sweet fusible appliqued hearts.

 I traced them all onto Heat 'n Bond Lite, my favorite fusible web.

 Then, because I like cutting things out, I cut around each and every heart.  You could skip this step and just press the whole square onto the back of your fabric.

 Here's my stack of hearts, all ready to fuse.

 I made yellow hearts.

 I made pink hearts.

I made minty green, purple and blue hearts.  Then I cut out all of the hearts - yippee!  Aren't they looking pretty?  More to come in a future post.

So Pretty in Pink ~ A Work in Progress

 Good morning!  I'm currently in the process of revising a few of my older patterns, and consequently sewing new versions of these fun quilts.  Here's a little peeky at one of them.

 This quilt is going to feature a pink and white color scheme.

 I'm pulling all of the fabrics from my stash.  This one has some pretty blues in it, but I think it will read well as one of the white fabrics.  I like the scrappy look.

 This pretty pink has bouquets of roses all over it.  So sweet!

 The blocks in this quilt are perfect for chain piecing.  I'm stitching them together on my favorite vintage machine, my Singer 301.

 It's so easy to sew triangle squares with this method, my favorite.  

 You get two for one!  Aren't these fabrics cute together?  I love to mix the old with the new.

 Here's a whole stack of pink and white triangle squares, ready to trim.

Needle, Paper, Scissors featuring Sparrow's Compass

 Sparrow's Compass.  This is my Island Batik Ambassador's project for October.  As you can see, I am coming in just under the line ~ it is October 31st!  Happy Halloween.

 This month's challenge was paper piecing.  It could be English paper piecing (think hexagons), or foundation paper piecing.  I do adore making hexies, but I had a few other deadlines to meet in October, so I opted for a foundation paper piecing project.  

 I featured the All A Flutter fabric line for my October project.  Look at these fabulous pinks, purples, and teals.  These colors speak to my heart.  I couldn't wait to get started.

 I decided to piece something new to me, a Mariner's Compass block.  Because I was short on time, I designed a large compass for a small, one block quilt.  Here are some of the sections I pieced together to form the compass.

 This photo shows several of the sections pieced together.

 I opted to hand applique it onto the solid gray background fabric.  See the pink bird fabric featured in the center of the quilt?  That's the "sparrow".

Sparrow's Compass was inspired by Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series.  If you haven't seen the movies, he has a compass that doesn't point north.  Instead, it points to the thing you desire the most, your heart's desire.  A romantic notion that I just loved....

 This is the fabric I used to sew the inner border.  Lots of birds and dragonflies flitting here and there on a saturated pink purple fabric.

I used Hobbs Thermore batting (in the back of this photo) to quilt my project.

 I'm not quite finished quilting this, so here are a few "in progress" photos.

 I'm quilting this in straight lines that accent the flow of each piece.  I'm using matching thread and thoroughly enjoying the process.  

This is the current progress on Sparrow's Compass as of this morning.  I'll be sure to post an update when I have time to finish it.
