Moving on to the next step in my Island Batik/Studio 180 project. I've cut out all of my Split Recs units and am ready to piece them together. The most important thing to remember here is to be sure the diagonal line is running in the right direction before you begin to sew. For my quilt, I made 40 black and white split recs units.
Disclaimer: The products used to make this project were given to me by Island Batik and Industry Partners.
Then I moved on and sewed the color and gray units. Notice that the diagonal line runs the opposite direction for these units. See how they line up for sewing? Easy-peasy! And they don't have to be perfect, because the units will be trimmed down to size in the next step.
Isn't this blue Island Batik fabric dreamy? I chose all fabrics from my stash for this project to get the rainbow effect. It was fun to dig through my drawers of Island Batik fabric and choose just the right thing.
After sewing all the triangles together I pressed them with my Oliso iron. I used Schmetz needles and Aurifil thread to piece my units.
After pressing, the units are trimmed down to the size needed. You just line up the diagonal sewn seam and the edges of the unit and trim it down. So simple and everything comes out perfectly. I had time to trim all of the black and white units. I will be trimming the color and gray units this afternoon, during my Fourth of July sewing session. Happy Fourth of July!

On a side note, did you see my Facebook and Instagram post about the Missouri Star US State Embroidery Map? I'm so excited to be stitching away on this fun project in my spare moments. I began by outlining my home state North Carolina. This is such a creative project. You can literally do anything with it to make this your own custom map of the USA.
