Dresden Plate Blog Hop featuring Dresden Interrupted

Welcome to my day on the Island Batik Ambassador Dresden Plate Blog Hop.  This is my quilt, Dresden Interrupted.

Disclaimer:  The products used to make this project were given to me by Island Batik and Industry Partners.
For the month of November, the Island Batik Ambassadors were asked to make a lap sized or larger quilt with a Dresden Plate theme.  I had never made a Dresden Plate quilt before.  It was a lot of fun.

We got to use the Surprise bundle of fabric that we received in our July Ambassador boxes.  Here is the collection I was sent:
Paradise Palms, designed by Kathy Engle.  It has beautiful oranges, greens, and beige colors with a hint of yellow, and some of the fabrics have a cute turtle design!  This fabric is in local quilt shops now.
A few of the shops carrying this fabric collection include:
Creekside Quilts ~ OR
Jelly Roll Fabric.net ~ IN
Quilt Country ~ TX

I didn't have an initial plan for my quilt, but I had a general idea of what I wanted to do.  First I cut a strip from each fabric in the collection (20 fabrics).  I sewed the strips into sets of five each.

Then I used this mini wedge tool that I bought eons ago and never used before to cut as many wedges as I could from each pieced strip.

Next I made the Dresden blades.  They were a lot of fun to sew.  I think they look kind of like ties.  My Oliso iron pressed everything nice and flat.

I love the variety.

Using the ten degree wedge tool, it would take 36 Dresden blades to make a complete circle.  Using that math, I sewed my blades into groups of three, still not sure what I was going to do with them.  At this point, I went to EQ8 and played with designs until I came up with something I liked.

I used Island Batik's solid dark gray for the background fabric.

Dresden Interrupted with seashell collection.  It seemed fitting with the Paradise Palms fabric.

Here is a close up of the center "interrupted" circle.  I used Hobbs Tuscany Collection Cotton batting (my favorite!), Aurifil Thread, and Schmetz needles.

Here's one of the corner Dresdens.

I took a lot of photos.  The colors fit in nicely with Autumn and November.

Modern Mini Star Quilt, Farmhouse Style

Modern Mini Star Quilt, Farmhouse Style

This quilt is available for sale in my Etsy shop at this link:  Modern Mini Star

A pattern to sew your own Modern Mini Star quilt is available at this link:  Modern Mini Star PDF Pattern

The finished size of this quilt measures 20" x 20".

It is backed with a lovely beige batik fabric.

The tiny center star measures 1-3/4" square.

All fabrics used to make this quilt are by Island Batik, from my stash accumulated as an Island Batik Ambassador.

Horizontal view.

This quilt would make a lovely Christmas or housewarming gift.  I can be used to decorate a small space on a wall or as a table topper.  It would look absolutely beautiful on a Thanksgiving table.

This quilt is straight line quilted with a yellow thread to match the beige/yellow sections and add contrast and interest to the black areas.

I used a very dark blue fabric for the binding.  The binding was hand stitched to the back of the quilt.

What's in Your Bag Challenge with ByAnnie and Island Batik

For the October Island Batik Ambassador and ByAnnie challenge, I made these two Payday bags.

Disclaimer:  The items used to make this project were given to me by Island Batik and industry partners.
This month the Island Batik Ambassadors made byAnnie bags.  This is the fifth year we have had byAnnie as an industry partner for the Island Batik Ambassador program.  I have thoroughly enjoyed making and using my ByAnnie bags.  I use and love my bags every day!

ByAnnie supplied us with a kit to make the bag or project of our choice.  The kit includes the pattern, soft and stable, hardware, zippers, interfacing, and anything else needed to sew the project.  A few things I love about ByAnnie patterns, are the step-by-step instructions with checkboxes for every action from cutting to finishing, a sheet of tags that you can copy and use to label each piece of your project (I print mine out on sticker paper), and the add-on videos, so if I get stuck or need extra help on any part of my project, I can watch the video.  This time around I chose to make the Payday bag in two sizes.  It's a small, lightweight bag with multiple pockets, some zippered, and an adjustable strap that I can easilly toss my essentials into when I need to go out.

Island Batik supplied the fabric for my bags.  I chose to use fabric from the new Peach Blossom collection by Claudia Pfeil.  Aren't these soft pearly colors just gorgeous?  I'm in love.

Back view of Payday bags.

Inside pocket for carrying credit cards, driver's license, etc.  The larger size bag has a double wide pocket like this.

Zippered pockets.  Great for my car keys or a small bit of spending money.

Back pocket.  I used this today to carry a note to my son's school.  Look at that fabric!  Mmmm...I'm crushing on it. Love, love, love!

Here's a look at the larger bag, showing the zippered pockets and the pink lining fabric.

This is the first time I've made a byAnnie bag without quilting.  I felt like it needed a little something when I finished, so I added this yellow star (cut from an Accuquilt die) to the small bag and a pink star to the larger Payday bag.  I rather like it!

Payday bags, large and small.
