Try a Technique ~ Quilt it Like a Rock Star

Disclaimer:  The fabrics in this post were given to me by Island Batik.
This is my Island Batik Ambassador challenge project for March ~ Quilt it Like a Rock Star.

Our challenge was to try a technique new to us.  I already had the idea for "Quilt it Like a Rock Star" bouncing around in my brain, but I needed to go outside my comfort zone and make it in a new way for me.  I decided to try machine reverse applique.

I started my project with these super hot pinks from the Sunflower Serenade collection.

I laid them out in a random order, then pieced them together to make my underlay panel.

I used old fashioned dressmaker's carbon to trace the design onto the black fabric.  I drew the letters myself in EQ8 ~ this is not a standard font.

Next I stitched on the outline of each letter using black thread and a small stitch length.

I carefully cut away the inside of the letters after stitching to reveal the design.

I used Hobbs 80/20 batting and quilted echoes around the words with Superior Thread's King Tut in Obsidian.

For some odd reason, my cats were extra attracted to this quilt.  I normally do a much better job of keeping them off my works in progress.  This is Trail Mix. She follows me everywhere ~ my own personal stalker.  You can see the green backing fabric I used in this photo.  It's an older Island Batik fabric I had in my stash.

I can honestly say after trying reverse machine applique, that I'm not a huge fan.  I do however, like the results.  This is going to hang in my studio somewhere.  I'll have to make room for it.  A pattern for this quilt will be available later this year so you too can "Quilt it Like a Rock Star".

  1. Fun! I am also not a fan of reverse applique, but like paperpiecing, sometimes you get the result you want and have to buck up and do it!

  5. I'm glad the result was such a fun quilt for your studio that you are happy with. :) Reverse appliqué might not have become a favourite, but it never hurts to have extra skills and you've done a great job.

  6. This is terrific and learning a new technique is a good thing. They don’t always become our favorite, but they are there when you need them!
