Sunflower Medallion Quilt

This is the Sunflower Medallion quilt.  It's the largest quilt I've made in a long time.  At 68" x 76" it's certainly not the biggest quilt I've ever sewn, but it is big enough that I had to take this photo of it sideways on my clothesline.

Medallion Quilts is the last Island Batik Ambassador challenge for 2020.  It's been a crazy year overall, but still a fabulous year for quilting.  I'm so honored to be a part of this group of prolific and inspiring quilt makers.

William gave his quilty approval.

I used this Lemon Grass 10" squares pack, plus some blenders, solids, and stash builders for my quilt.  I cut as many pieces as I could with my Accuquilt Go, and also used Hobbs Cotton Batting, Schmetz Needles, and Aurifil Thread for both the piecing and the quilting.

I've always admired medallion quilts, but never actually made one.  I designed this large Sunflower Dresden and Applique block for the center.  This was also my first time sewing a Dresden.  It's not perfect, but I enjoyed it and would do it again.  I quilted loops and straight lines in the flower petals and pebbles in the center part of the flower with a gold Aurifil thread, #2134.

I quilted the rest of the quilt in the same gold Aurifil thread in an allover loopy meander.

When I finish quilting, I go back and weave in all my thread ends at one time.  While doing that on the Sunflower Medallion quilt, I felt something hard inside my quilt.  It turned out to be this tiny screw!  I had to unsew one of the seams and pull it out with a tweezer.  I have no idea how the screw got into my quilt or where it came from.  I hope it didn't somehow fall out of my sewing machine.

I backed this quilt with a lovely light yellow Island Batik fabric, Parchment.

I bound my quilt with a few different blue fabrics from a stash builders roll.

I had fun sewing this quilt and I'm ready to snuggle under it with one of my cats tonight.

  1. Beautiful, Jennifer!! I LOVE the sunflower center! What's the block on the outer border? And was that block cut with accuquilt? I really like that block. Your colors are amazing, I love the warm colors with Lemon Grass--that combo would never had occurred tome!
