Vintage Reimagined featuring Strawberry Rose

Disclaimer:  The products used to make this quilt were given to me by Island Batik at no cost to me.
Meet Strawberry Rose, my Island Batik Ambassador project for March.

This month's challenge is to make a quilt inspired by a vintage quilt.  The quilt had to measure 36" x 36" or more....so my quilt measures exactly 36" x 36".

I browsed through my Vintage Quilts board on Pinterest to get some ideas and found this amazing quilt, "Strawberry Quilt" circa 1848.  Look at the flawless applique, stuffed work, and quilting on this masterpiece!  You can read more about this quilt here:  Olde Hope Strawberry Quilt.

My quilt is a MUCH simpler version, but I think it has the same vintage, large applique vibe to it with lots of white space in the background.  I changed the strawberries to large rosebuds, turned them around and also simplified by only making one flower per motif.  I also simplified the sweet pretty in pink scallop border.

All of my patches were sewn using Heat 'N Bond Lite for fusible applique.

I stitched around each patch using Aurifil thread in a matching color and a small zigzag stitch.

I really like the new solids Island Batik has added to their fabric line.  This bright white makes the gorgeous reds, greens, and pinks look outstanding!  I didn't use a specific Island Batik fabric collection for this quilt.  I just pulled out some IB stash fabrics I had in the appropriate colors.

I used my giant cone of white Aurifil thread to quilt straight lines on a diagonal radiating out from the center of the quilt.  I hope that huge cone of white thread lasts forever.  I've used it on so many projects and it's still going...like a never ending cone of thread...dreams!

I used Hobbs Premium Cotton Batting for the inside of my quilt.  I love cotton batting so much.  It smells good when it comes out of the package and quilts beautifully.  It gives my quilt such a natural feel to it.

Fuzzy the photo bomber helped with the quilting a little bit.

I backed this quilt with fabric from Island Batik's Globetrotter collection.

I used more of the solid white fabric for the binding. I cut my binding strips with my Accuquilt Go and a strip cutting die, so fast and easy!

  3. Lovely! I especially like the pink--not sure if it is ombre or just a blended fabric, but what a perfect choice!
