Hello, and welcome to my little segment of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 14 Blog Tour. I'm so happy you stopped by. It's the last day of the tour. I hope you've been visiting the designers all week long. It's so much fun to see what other people are making and hear about the inspiration behind their blocks.
My block for this issue is "Twirly Dot". It's block #1354. The pattern for my block appears on page 38 in the Mixed Technique section of the magazine. Twirly Dot is such a fun block to sew. The piecing part of the block is quick and easy. The color placement of the dots allows you to utilize your artsy style, plus it's a fabby block for digging into your scrap basket.
Do you have one of these in your sewing room? Likely. Do you have three kittens in your sewing room? Probably not! What do you do with your scraps? Do you immediately cut and sort them for "future projects"? Do you let them accumulate until they completely take over your sewing area? Do you simply ~gasp!~ throw them away? While the Twirly Dot block may not use up all of your scraps, it can make a dent in your basket. Here are a few examples of different color combinations to play with:
The Lighter Side
If you don't care for the black background, consider using gray for the background fabric and white for the strips.
Surf and Sand
For a beachy look, use white for the background, sand for the strips, and various blues for the dots.
Denim Blues
Maybe your stash has a lot of one color in it. I seem to have more blue than anything else. You could sew a Twirly Dot block with a black background and blues (or whatever color you have handy) for the strips and the dots.
Carnival
Another option would be to sew the black and grey pieced blocks, and then randomly cut and place different color dots from your stash for a scrappy look. Fun!
And now...for the giveaway. I know you need a copy of Volume 14 for your collection. Just look at all the colorful eye candy on the cover! It makes me smile like sunshine through the Autumn leaves!
I hope I've inspired you with some fun color possibilities for the Twirly Dot block. What is your favorite color combination? Leave a comment below, and you'll be in the running for your very own copy of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 14. I'll randomly choose a winner for the issue. At this moment my "scrap" pile is wider and higher then you "scrap pile" as I sort thru for a landscape quilt in the back of my mind. I generally prefer dark saturated colors but enjoyed some of your lighter blocks in this design.
ReplyDeleteCarnival is my favorite - I like high contrast. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteLove the picture with the kittens :-) Your block is fun and new! I like several of the colorways you showed. The beachy one caught my attention though. Nice design!

I'm a bright multi color combination kind of gal; so that's my pick!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun block and one that can use up your scraps and make a colorful block and quilt. I store my scraps in plastic tubs...none of which is the same size as they don't stock the same container very long...or it takes me too long to fill a tub...living in Alaska you are grateful for what you can get! Thanks for sharing your wonderful block.
ReplyDeletemy favorite color combo is red and white....thank you for your block, I loved seeing the different color combinations
ReplyDeletelately I have like the turquoise and gray combo but it will change again in the future..

ReplyDeleteWhat a great block. I love the Denim Blues
ReplyDeleteI live Surf and Sand, it looks very breezy. I only have 1 cat, but she does lay on my fabric! Thank you, peterstankovich@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI like the lighter side block. I like your purple flower quilt. It has been years since I had kittens: they do lo;e to play and would find lots of tubs of scrapes in my sewing room. I work and work at using the scrapes but more seem to arrive. I need to stop buying more fabric.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite combination is Carnival. This is a great block!
ReplyDeleteDenim Blues is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer. These magazines are always chock full of fantastic blocks. If you don't mind an Australian entering, I'd love to win this one :)

ReplyDeletecongratulations. what a fun block. my kitty is now 10 years old. but he is part Russian Blue, and one of their traits is that they tend to be kittenish for a very long time. so fun. he is always with me, especially in my sewing area. he likes to be on top of things, lol. I really like to put my scraps in their bins as soon as I am done with cutting. right now my stash is relatively small so that is easy to do. my favorite color combinations right now are coral/turquoise.

ReplyDeleteI have 6 kitties, but they are outdoor cats, so they only get into my sunroom. Though that is where the machine that I'm going to be doing the machine quilting on is located! I like the multicolor scrappy block best, it's what I would likely make.
ReplyDeleteI love color, but if I have to choose it would be grey as a neutral, teal and peach.

ReplyDeletenikilsend(at)outlook(dot)com
I would love to see this block in desert sunset colors or in the colors of the rainbow. This looks like it would be fun to pick our the color choices. Maybe you could do a block in each color of the rainbow and then put it together into a quilt.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color combo of the moment is navy, gold, red, and a plummy purple. I just keep pulling those colors every time I start a project, no matter what the subject or for whom I'm making it.

ReplyDeleteThanks for showing different colorways. I like 'the lighter side' best, but I can also imagine it in bright primary colors like a crayola box.
ReplyDeleteI love the blue vrsion very much!
ReplyDeleteI liked the beach/sand color combo the best, but all of them were wonderful and I can see how versatile this block is!
ReplyDeleteYour block really does look fun. I throw all my scraps into baskets or small boxes and have yet to really sort them. This block would definitely use some of them up. Of your color combinations Denim Blues is my favorite and I would probably make my block in similar colors.
ReplyDeleteLove the Carnival block. We don't have cats but do have a dog who is so naughty in the sewing room--stealing fabric strips.
