Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 4

Oh yes!  The day is finally here.  I'm as happy as the day is long that you have decided to visit my blog today for the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 4 Blog Tour. Thanks so much for coming.  It's an honor for me to be a part of this, and I want you, dear readers, to be a part of it, too.  I will be giving away a copy of the upcoming 100 Blocks, Volume 4 to a lucky reader today, so read on!

Here's a peek at the cover of the magazine.  I have a copy of this in my hot little hands, and it is just fantastic!  There is such a great variety of blocks to make, and it is exciting to see all the designer's creative minds at work.

How did I  come to be a part of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks?  I started out as a block tester for 100 Blocks, Volume 3.  While testing blocks I was inspired to submit a block of my own, and voila!  It was accepted for Volume 4.  I also tested 14 blocks for the Volume 4 issue.  I will be showing my versions of those in a later post, when the issue arrives on newstands, November 15th.

In My Garden

Here's my block, In My Garden.  So cute!  I did find a turtle in my garden this summer.  The boys gave it a good examination, and put it gently in the woods.  The pieces are all fusible appliqued and edged with a tiny zig-zag stitch.

In My Garden Quilt

I also made a small wall hanging with my block.  I love the way the stripey border looks like the woods at the edge of my garden.  The four patch blocks in the corner remind my of a checkered racing flag.  Perfect for my speedy turtle!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!  Please be sure to visit the other designers on the blog tour all week.  You can find more information at quiltmaker.com/100blocks.  To see more of my designs, please visit my shop at curlicuecreations.com.

To win an issue of the upcoming Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 4, leave me a comment about something unusual you have found in your garden, or if you don't have a garden, what would you grow if you did?  I will pick a random winner out of all the comments from today.

Until next time, have a super day!

Jennifer

  1. Congrats on your block being chosed :D! This past summer our organic backyard brought us small dark frogs and a teeny-tiny garden-snake, so small we thought it was a common garden worm at first. But it lifted up & moved his/her head to look @ us while a teeny-tiny tongue did it 'snakey-thing'. We froze in place & let the adorable itsey-bit slither off to safty.

  2. I live in town but have an opossum living in my backyard - catch glimpses of it at night. Congratulations on being included in the new mag. Love the little turtle. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

  3. Congratulations on having your first (and cute) block for "100 Blocks" published! It is a great magazine and I've enjoyed the three previous issues of it.

I don't have a garden but I do plant flower boxes on my townhouse terrace. Our surprise visitors this year were snails! We had one (we named him Garry--guess why) that hung out for about three weeks just under a ledge. A few others took up residence on the sides of the boxes. The funny thing is our terrace is on the second floor so I gotta wonder how they even got all the way up to us! This was my first "gardening" experience so I can't wait to see what happens next year!

  4. Love your block! This year for the first time, I saw a hummingbird in my garden :-) We have plants to attract butterflies, but it's the first time we have entertained a hummingbird! I really enjoyed the previous issues of 100 blocks, and this one looks just as inspiring :-)

  5. I don't have a garden as I have a "black thumb". If I had a garden I would want to grow tomatoes. Thankfully, I have a neighbor who grows them and shares them with me! Your turtle reminded me of a strange week last year where one day I came across a large snapping turtle in a parking lot at the local college and then the next day found a tree frog clinging to the side of my washing machine in my basement. Very odd.

  6. I found a racoon in my garden, eating my tomatoes. cute, at least until he/she started moving toward me.

  7. We found a pumpkin growing in our garden this year, and we never planted any. On thinking back, we realized that the year before I had thrown out the pulp and seeds after canning a store-bought pumpkin, and it must have taken hold!

  8. What a fun time you must have had testing blocks in vol. 3. Congrats on your block being chosen, who doesn't love turtles and gardens! This year I found a box turtle. I put out some water and never saw him again. Also those little bitty toads. I was digging up a spot and out from the hole he jumps. Made me nervous for future digging.

  9. I found a mushroom. Though really that's not all that unusual. I was just thrilled because it was so pretty. It was a little red topped mushroom that looked like it should belong to a gnome.

  10. Your In My Garden Block is so cute. I found the cutest little frog in my garden. Just another one of God's amazing creature. Makes you stop and think about that TV commercial. I would love to win a copy of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 4 with all of the great variety of blocks and so many ideas. Thank you.

  12. I have an oak tree that has sprouted from an acorn that fell into my garden. Usually I catch them before they get very big, but this one was hiding beside my rose bush and it got to be 2 feet tall before I found it!!

  13. I found a spoon buried in my garden! IKR?? It is a wonderful, sturdy soup spoon that is perfect for planting!

  14. Cute block. Congrats on being published. The things we see around our place are just normal so if I could plant something in my garden it would be an avocado tree. But it will never grow here in NC. I love avocados.

  15. Your block is lovely! Congratulations on being chosen for 100 blocks! In my garden - we put a little fence around it but my doxle pup still got in to eat all my garlic and onions! Love the peppers too! lol thanks!

  16. Your block is very cute!
Well, I live on a military base, and can't have a garden, but we have found lots of interesting critters in the front yard. We've had deer, who enjoy eating my flowers; javelina, who dump the trash cans and make terrible messes; and coyotes who howl right next the house and startle us, and in the rainy season we had a tarantula in the drive way. Have you guessed I live in the desert? Thanks for a chance to win this wonderful magazine.

  17. Grats on your block being selected. Is so cute.

  18. That sounds like a fun thing to do...test out other blocks. I can certainly see why yours was chosen. Great to have a story...finding the turtle will always be remembered. Haven't found anything too unusual in my garden except for the lost ball or two that always appear when I'm pulling the plants to ready the garden for winter.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Not all that unusual, but this past summer my kids caught a toad in the garden and kept it in a terrarium for a while. Love your turtle block--would be fun to find one in the garden! Thanks for the chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love to find "volunteers" growing in my garden and trying to figure out what they will be when they grow up!
    thanks

  21. Haven't had a garden for a number years, but since we have moved farther south I am looking forward to growing tomatoes. Congratulations on a lovely block and thanks for the chance to win!

  23. I found a huge stash of peanut shells in the back part of my garden. Must be a busy squirrel in the area. Your block is lovely. Congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  24. The turtle is adorable! We have never found anything quite like him in our garden. We mainly have plently of toads. One one occassion in the spring a nest of rabbits.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Cute block - perfect for a cheery little wallhanging. I'd love to win Vol 4. thanks for the chance.

I have a big garden & every year I put place an upside down ceramic flower pot with a chunk cut out of the side & the drip tray on top to cover the draingae hole. It's a toad house! And every year a big toad shows up -hopping around & showing off. Sometimes I see him taking a nap in his house. I'd like to think it is the same toad but probably not!

  26. This is a great block. Thank you for sharing it with us. Several years ago we had a couple of very large frogs out front in the flower bed area. I loved listening to them in the evening. Here is the link to the post I wrote about them. http://cjcal4now.blogspot.com/2007/06/i-had-no-idea.html. Take care and God bless, Cory

  27. First, let me say that I absolutely love your block! We do have a garden; a very large raised bed vegie garden as well as several flower beds. The most disgusting thing ever found in the veg garden was the year we raised sweet potatoes and at harvest time discovered that the bed was infested with RATS...needless to say...no sweet potatoes used from the garden that year. We also get a lot of bunnies and butterflies...much nicer. And just a couple of weeks ago, we had a tiny Garter-snake on top of a flower. Photo posted on my FB page.

  28. Congrats on having a block in the magazine. I signed up to Test for Volume 5. It is so much fun! Thanks for inspiring us with your cute Block.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am a turtle lover - so I can't wait to get my hands on the instructions for this block!!!

Unusual items in my garden? The most exciting was when the scraggly grass lawn we had on the side of our house burst into blooms of tulips the first spring we were in the house - the previous owner had planted them and we bought the house in the summer so had no idea. I could, however, have done without the poison oak AND poison ivy I found there this summer.

  42. I had hummingbird hawk moths in my garden this year! beautiful!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  43. You're a lady after my heart! A quilter AND a gardener! I usually plant a vegetable garden, and it tends to get a little overgrown because I work full-time outside the house. This year, I was out doing some bug-control (picking off bugs and knocking them into soapy water) when I moved a leaf and found a HUGE preying mantis! They are not that common in our suburban neighborhood, and I sure was happy to see him. He was making my job easier by eating other bugs!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I also found a turtle in the backyard. It belonged to the little boys next door and had found a way under the fence. Love the block!

    ReplyDelete
  45. We continually find pieces of broken glass in our garden. We bought an old house in the country and I guess someone didn't like to through things in the trash. We have found a pair of pliers, nails, and old bricks as well.

    ReplyDelete
  46. How cute and special is that block! Congrats on making the new book! Looking forward to seeing Volume 4!

  47. Love gardening and your block with that darling turtle. I had a sunflower grow in my garden this year. Birds must have dropped the seed. It was gorgeous. Thanks for the giveaway. love the magazine.

  48. Garden finds - among the plants and weeds there was a golf ball, a baseball, a lacrosse ball and a softball all in the same flower bed. Just can't imagine how those got there! LOL Dog or kid?

  49. I have flower and vegetable gardens and I can't say that I have really found anything unusual yet. Thanks for the giveaway.

  50. We found a collard green plant growing in the concrete at the edge of the garden. We don't even grow collards! It was a gift for sure. Congratulations on designing a block for volume 4. Testing for volume 3 must have been very interesting. and fun

  55. ah, a garden... I just look forward to trying again next year for a garden. It was over 100 here the first week of June! Everything burned up this year except for some volunteer sunflowers from the birdfeeders ;)

  56. Since moving to the country, we are amazed at the things we dig up in the garden or that surface in the springtime. We've had tons of glass--some very old, judging by the color, thickness, clarity, corners, etc. Lots of nails, including some square ones. Shards of china, which I keep with the thought of making a mosaic stepping stone some day. My favorite find was a small pepper shaker, very old, with pepper still inside. I felt like an archeologist!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Lil turtle is so sweet!! Congrats on your block being included!! Growing up near Gettysburg, my brother and I were always sure we were going to find a buried treasure in the backyard. The first year our family roto-tilled the garden plot, we found a heavy lid with a knob and ring. We were sure it was the back of a cannon from the civil war. Disappointment soon followed, as we were gently informed that it was a top cover to an old septic tank. Still looking for that buried treasure!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Great block. The turtle is so cute. I used to find what we kids would call Tiger Spiders. They were huge. They were yellow and green stripped. When you got close to their webs they would shake it. It always scared us.

    ReplyDelete
  59. We had a small vegetable garden this year. We live in the borough on 3/4 of an acre. One morning we went out to find that all our plants had been trampled and the leaves eaten by deer. My husband went and bought some wire to make a fence. Unfortunately, the plants never really recovered so we had a very small harvest.
Congratulations on getting your block in this issue.

  60. After transplanting columbine plants to my front gardens from my back gardens I found each place I planted one a tomato plant grew right alongside it. Hhhmmmm ......?

  63. This is PERFECT! I love applique and turtles are my absolute favorites. Besides that, every spring my garden plays hostess to a turtle who lays her eggs there. Thanks for creating a block that represents a piece of my life! I'll be doing this one for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  64. When we reclaimed the yard from the foreclosure we bought, we found toys, tools, you name it! Every day was a new adventure. I think what was even cooler though, was when we had a problem with slugs, and we tried an "old wives tale" to fix it....and it worked! A tin of cheap beer over night....slugs can't resist it!

Thanks for the chance to win! LOVE the 100 blocks issues!

  65. I found a 35 kilo pumpkin this year in my garden! My goodness! Normally I have just small ones about 2 to 5 kilos!

  68. Lovely block. I'm afraid all that is growing in my garden is weeds and grass. I used to have lantana and marigolds, but I haven't had the time and when I did have the time I didn't have the energy to get it cleaned up!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Awww...I love your cute little block and the wall hanging you made with it! Applique is my favorite technique and I'll definitely be making your block. Congrats on having it published.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I love finding surprises in my garden!! I came home from work one day in the winter and found over 100 mud-puppies (salamanders) in my fish pond!!! STILL don't know where they came from!! I can't wait to get my hands on one of those books myself!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm not fortunate enough to have lots of space for a garden...but if I did have one I'd want anything that attracted butterflies and lady bugs. I just love how these two insects interact with a garden. You keep the bees, snails, worms, and beetles...well I guess I'd need them too to have a florishing garden! Love the color blue you selected for your turtle body. Sandi

What a sweet block! This summer I found a garter snake in our garden and I let out a squeal! I know they are harmless but he certainly surprised me!

  75. What an adorable block. I love turtles and in high school one of my friends and I both called each other turtle. (We were always the last two to finish running the track around the football field in gym class. We had fun yacking rather than worrying about hurrying along lol)
I no longer have a garden in my yard although this year we did buy some boxes online to grow tomatoes in. That was the first in over 11 yrs. BUT, when I did have a garden we had nightly visits from a huge raccoon. And skunk too. One night while standing in my kitchen doing dishes I looked up and saw two huge glowing circles staring at me. I totally freaked out. Evidentially the 'coon decided he wanted to visit my large flat bird feeder which we installed outside the kitchen window which is only about 2-3 feet away from where I stand to do dishes. My window was open but the screen was there but I remebered how sharp their claws are and was so scared he was going to come in that window and say hi. LOL Thankfully my scream freaked him out too and all he did was stand on his back feet to stare at me. I VERY quickly closed that window and watched him staring at me.

I think I'd much rather find the turtle. :)

Your block is awesome. Very cool the way the flower leans over the little turtle as if to protect him from the rain. (of course that would be IF it were raining)

  76. turtles are NOT allowed in my garden as they like to eat my tomatoes! Correction-real turtles not allowed-have one othe sandbox style htat I use to make compost out of my garbage.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Cute block.

Does a golf ball count as unusual? :) Would it help to say we live in the country...no golf course around and no kiddo's? This is better...one year we had a coyote in our apple tree eating end of the season apples! True!!!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I don't have a garden, but I'd love to grow all kinds of herbs if I did have one. Congratulations on being in the magazine!

    ReplyDelete
  79. What an adorable little turtle block!

The most unusual thing I found in my garden happened yesterday. It's November, and I found new blossoms opening on my tomato plants, Pineapple Sage and Flowering Quince bushes. The weather has been so strange lately, that my plants must think it's Spring.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Love that turtle block. Now that we have cleaned out the garden the squirrels are enjoying planting nuts in the soft soil. I would love to have only flowers in my garden!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I would love to grow raspberries if I had a garden

    ReplyDelete
  82. Sweet block! The only thing I've found in my garden were snakes. They were not very welcome. :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. My garden is about 5 ft X 5 ft. Previously I hadn't been able to grown anything but have been having some success, really surprised me but my knockout roses really did well this year. I know that isn't unusual for most people but for me...Anyway, I love your block, the turtle is so cute!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Great block! I love gardening too.
My unusual find ~ Bumble bee nest; though a surprise, is a most welcome find. I've stayed away from the nest area but enjoy watching them around the flowers. Physics says they can't fly but someone forgot to tell the 'humble bumble'.

Thanks for sharing your artistry Jennifer.

    Love your block/wallhanging!

  90. I would love to find a turtle in my gardens; but all I ever find are spiders, butterflies, birds, and chipmunks....nothing unusual.
Would love to win a copy of this new magazine to add with the other 3 past issues I have.

  91. Hi Jennifer, I don't have a garden but if I did I would grow a salsa garden...ya know? tomatoes, peppers, garlic..mmmm! Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the mag, can't wait :o)

  92. Such a darling block--and even better in the mini-quilt. We have a flower (a mystery one) that is just opening up (in chilly November in the Midwest). It's sort of zinnia-ish, but not sure. The color is orangey pink and there are two more blossoms that may still open (the leaves are blackish, though, so not sure how long it will last).

    ReplyDelete
  93. Love your block! I have no space for a garden but I would love to grow tomatoes if I did! Thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  94. It was so cold here (WA) that my garden didn't grow well but a nice big patch of petunias did LOL. They must have self-seeded from the soil from last year's flower pots. Other than that an occasional deer stops by to see if there is anything worth nibbling.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Your block is darling -- love the little turtle! We're constantly finding interesting things in our 'garden'! Both flora and fauna! Most recently, though, I'd have to say it was a beautiful little purple wildflower I'd never seen before! :)

    ReplyDelete
  96. I love your block, love garden themes and applique, plus it looks great just by itself in a quilt. I find lots of things in my garden, lots of critters live there, lol. Nothing unusual, but tomato worms gross me out, luckily I didn't get any this year.

    ReplyDelete
  97. What I found in my garden this year would not make a great quilt block - SLUGS - hundreds of babies all summer. I'd rather find a turtle!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Besides the slugs and moles, I once found a baby possum. Luckily I saw him before the dogs did and I was able to shoo tem inside.

    ReplyDelete
  99. The most unusual thing found in our garden (besides critters of snakes, deer, rabbits, birds, possum, coons, turkey, lizards, gopher, moles, etc.) - on a pink rose bush there was a caterpillar which was the same pink as the bloom. It's like it ate the buds and turned pink. It was so strange to see.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I found pieces of what looked like torn up fiber. Found out my Corgi had taken recycled cardboard out of the bin and torn it to pieces under the roses.

    ReplyDelete
  101. No garden this year. But cucumbers were a big hit with my grandchildren. Great flower block!

    ReplyDelete
  102. I really like your block. The strangest thing I ever found in our garden was an armidillo. It was just setting there, but finally moved and we did not see it again

  103. An American Bald Eagle visits my garden. I feel the most proviledged gardener in Virginia (though i knows he goes to other places) my grands love him. but we have nexting turtles and beaver building dams (5 so far) and lots lots more. i think maybe i live in heaven. shobbs@vcu.edu

  104. Ok. You asked, so I will tell you what I found in my garden a few summers ago. Ick ick ickity ick. I found a large....dead....rat....under my tomato plant. Yucky yucky yucky. Someone in the neighborhood must have set out poison, then it crawled over and died in my yard. Oh, and this summer I discovered a dead rat floating in the water barrel under the apple tree...this happened TWICE! I don't get it...

Why can't I find a cute little turtle like the one on your adorable quilt block!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. We've found an old railroad spike, pieces of old dishes, and loads of monarch butterflies!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Probably the most unusual thing we found in our garden was a wild rabbit. We saw it occasionally for a few weeks then it moved on. Very cute little rabbit!

    ReplyDelete
  107. I'm so envious of those who have garden's...would love to have one filled with wonderful flowers and vegetables.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I grew a very unusually shaped potato this summer. I love it when the vegies do their own thing!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Love the turtle! He can visit my garden anytime. I'm going to have to get this issue from Quiltmaker. I'm seeing too many blocks that I love.

    ReplyDelete
  110. How I would love to find a turtle in my garden, instead of the snakes that I meet face to face when I bend down to smell my roses!!!!!
Love your block and congrats on being in vol 4......I'm loving each and every volume!

  111. Thank you for the warm welcome to your blog. Hmmm what would I plant if I had a garden. If it could grow, I'd plant money! Why? so I could continue to add to my "fabric collection" of course.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Not so unusual but scary as heck, a tarantula.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I've not ever had a turtle visit my garden, but other critters certainly have. That's not so unusual since I live surrounded by state park property. The strangest has to be the 'reindeer' my then 5 year old granddaughter saw eating acorns. I seriously doubt reindeer live in the Southern US. :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. love your block ... i love doing this kind of applique. i do backyard birding and had a common snipe, most unusual, for a whole afternoon.

  116. Your block is darling. We like to find new plants coming up from previous plantings. nothing better than finding cilantro, dill, zinnias, tomatoes and other good stuff coming up all on their own. Otttexas@yahoo.com

  117. Where I live there are always strange things in the garden, but the strangest has to be the five foot iguana who was passing through on his way to the pool. Thanks.

  118. I just LOVE your turtle!!! The most interesting thing I've found in my flower garden was my sweet cat Sable peeking out from under the tiger lilies one day!

  119. I have an very very old motor in my garden. My grandfather used the motor in his farm. They didn't have electricity. I would like to plant some flowers around it and have a nice chair beside so I could sit and remember him, my grandmother and my parents

  122. So cute...and we do have turtles in our yard. Something unusual would be an arrow. I have no idea who sent it our way.

  124. Your block is adorable - When I was little (many many years ago) I won a little turtle at a fair - named her Magnolia - and she lived until I was in high school when she disappeared into my yard...

  125. Cute block indeed, well done! I once found an arrow in my garden that was coming from our neighbour, not a nice found unfortunately as it could have been dangerous if one of us had been out when it went over the fence...

  127. I don't have a garden b/c the deer eat everything! They are really overpopulated in my area. However, when I lived somewhere where the flea infested lyme disease rodents didn;t eat everything, my garden favorite was lupines!

  128. I once found a plastic skunk that showed up one day after I had some landscapers doing some work in our backyard. He is still sitting there 5 years later.
