Here's a peek at the cover of the magazine. I have a copy of this in my hot little hands, and it is just fantastic! There is such a great variety of blocks to make, and it is exciting to see all the designer's creative minds at work.
How did I come to be a part of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks? I started out as a block tester for 100 Blocks, Volume 3. While testing blocks I was inspired to submit a block of my own, and voila! It was accepted for Volume 4. I also tested 14 blocks for the Volume 4 issue. I will be showing my versions of those in a later post, when the issue arrives on newstands, November 15th.
In My Garden
Here's my block, In My Garden. So cute! I did find a turtle in my garden this summer. The boys gave it a good examination, and put it gently in the woods. The pieces are all fusible appliqued and edged with a tiny zig-zag stitch.

I also made a small wall hanging with my block. I love the way the stripey border looks like the woods at the edge of my garden. The four patch blocks in the corner remind my of a checkered racing flag. Perfect for my speedy turtle!

Congrats on your block being chosed :D! This past summer our organic backyard brought us small dark frogs and a teeny-tiny garden-snake, so small we thought it was a common garden worm at first. But it lifted up & moved his/her head to look @ us while a teeny-tiny tongue did it 'snakey-thing'. We froze in place & let the adorable itsey-bit slither off to safty.

ReplyDeleteI don't have a garden but I do plant flower boxes on my townhouse terrace. Our surprise visitors this year were snails! We had one (we named him Garry--guess why) that hung out for about three weeks just under a ledge. A few others took up residence on the sides of the boxes. The funny thing is our terrace is on the second floor so I gotta wonder how they even got all the way up to us! This was my first "gardening" experience so I can't wait to see what happens next year!
Love your block! This year for the first time, I saw a hummingbird in my garden :-) We have plants to attract butterflies, but it's the first time we have entertained a hummingbird! I really enjoyed the previous issues of 100 blocks, and this one looks just as inspiring :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't have a garden as I have a "black thumb". If I had a garden I would want to grow tomatoes. Thankfully, I have a neighbor who grows them and shares them with me! Your turtle reminded me of a strange week last year where one day I came across a large snapping turtle in a parking lot at the local college and then the next day found a tree frog clinging to the side of my washing machine in my basement. Very odd.

ReplyDeleteWe found a pumpkin growing in our garden this year, and we never planted any. On thinking back, we realized that the year before I had thrown out the pulp and seeds after canning a store-bought pumpkin, and it must have taken hold!

I put out some water and never saw him again. Also those little bitty toads. I was digging up a spot and out from the hole he jumps. Made me nervous for future digging.
ReplyDeleteI found a mushroom. Though really that's not all that unusual. I was just thrilled because it was so pretty. It was a little red topped mushroom that looked like it should belong to a gnome.

ReplyDeleteI have an oak tree that has sprouted from an acorn that fell into my garden. Usually I catch them before they get very big, but this one was hiding beside my rose bush and it got to be 2 feet tall before I found it!!

ReplyDeleteWell, I live on a military base, and can't have a garden, but we have found lots of interesting critters in the front yard. We've had deer, who enjoy eating my flowers; javelina, who dump the trash cans and make terrible messes; and coyotes who howl right next the house and startle us, and in the rainy season we had a tarantula in the drive way. Have you guessed I live in the desert? Thanks for a chance to win this wonderful magazine.

ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a fun thing to do...test out other blocks. I can certainly see why yours was chosen. Great to have a story...finding the turtle will always be remembered. Haven't found anything too unusual in my garden except for the lost ball or two that always appear when I'm pulling the plants to ready the garden for winter.

ReplyDeleteI have a big garden & every year I put place an upside down ceramic flower pot with a chunk cut out of the side & the drip tray on top to cover the draingae hole. It's a toad house! And every year a big toad shows up -hopping around & showing off. Sometimes I see him taking a nap in his house. I'd like to think it is the same toad but probably not!
This is a great block. Thank you for sharing it with us. Several years ago we had a couple of very large frogs out front in the flower bed area. I loved listening to them in the evening. ReplyDeleteFirst, let me say that I absolutely love your block! We do have a garden; a very large raised bed vegie garden as well as several flower beds. The most disgusting thing ever found in the veg garden was the year we raised sweet potatoes and at harvest time discovered that the bed was infested with RATS...needless to say...no sweet potatoes used from the garden that year. We also get a lot of bunnies and butterflies...much nicer. And just a couple of weeks ago, we had a tiny Garter-snake on top of a flower. Photo posted on my FB page.

The most exciting was when the scraggly grass lawn we had on the side of our house burst into blooms of tulips the first spring we were in the house - the previous owner had planted them and we bought the house in the summer so had no idea. I could, however, have done without the poison oak AND poison ivy I found there this summer.
I had hummingbird hawk moths in my garden this year! beautiful!

You're a lady after my heart! A quilter AND a gardener! I usually plant a vegetable garden, and it tends to get a little overgrown because I work full-time outside the house. This year, I was out doing some bug-control (picking off bugs and knocking them into soapy water) when I moved a leaf and found a HUGE preying mantis! They are not that common in our suburban neighborhood, and I sure was happy to see him. He was making my job easier by eating other bugs!

ReplyDeleteWe continually find pieces of broken glass in our garden. We bought an old house in the country and I guess someone didn't like to through things in the trash. We have found a pair of pliers, nails, and old bricks as well.

ReplyDeleteI don't have a garden here in San Antonio. But, at my home in North Houston years ago, I also found a turtle. There was a possum once and some weird looking birds with chicks passing through. I loved that place! Thank you for a chance to win. :-)

Since moving to the country, we are amazed at the things we dig up in the garden or that surface in the springtime. We've had tons of glass--some very old, judging by the color, thickness, clarity, corners, etc. Lots of nails, including some square ones. Shards of china, which I keep with the thought of making a mosaic stepping stone some day. My favorite find was a small pepper shaker, very old, with pepper still inside. I felt like an archeologist!

The first year our family roto-tilled the garden plot, we found a heavy lid with a knob and ring. We were sure it was the back of a cannon from the civil war. Disappointment soon followed, as we were gently informed that it was a top cover to an old septic tank. Still looking for that buried treasure!
ReplyDeleteGreat block. The turtle is so cute. I used to find what we kids would call Tiger Spiders. They were huge. They were yellow and green stripped. When you got close to their webs they would shake it. It always scared us.
ReplyDeleteWe had a small vegetable garden this year. We live in the borough on 3/4 of an acre. One morning we went out to find that all our plants had been trampled and the leaves eaten by deer. My husband went and bought some wire to make a fence. Unfortunately, the plants never really recovered so we had a very small harvest.

ReplyDeleteWhen we reclaimed the yard from the foreclosure we bought, we found toys, tools, you name it! Every day was a new adventure. I think what was even cooler though, was when we had a problem with slugs, and we tried an "old wives tale" to fix it....and it worked! A tin of cheap beer over night....slugs can't resist it!

ReplyDeleteI love finding surprises in my garden!! I came home from work one day in the winter and found over 100 mud-puppies (salamanders) in my fish pond!!! STILL don't know where they came from!! I can't wait to get my hands on one of those books myself!!

I just love how these two insects interact with a garden. You keep the bees, snails, worms, and beetles...well I guess I'd need them too to have a florishing garden! ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable block. I love turtles and in high school one of my friends and I both called each other turtle. (We were always the last two to finish running the track around the football field in gym class. We had fun yacking rather than worrying about hurrying along lol)
ReplyDeleteI no longer have a garden in my yard although this year we did buy some boxes online to grow tomatoes in. That was the first in over 11 yrs. BUT, when I did have a garden we had nightly visits from a huge raccoon. And skunk too. One night while standing in my kitchen doing dishes I looked up and saw two huge glowing circles staring at me. I totally freaked out. Evidentially the 'coon decided he wanted to visit my large flat bird feeder which we installed outside the kitchen window which is only about 2-3 feet away from where I stand to do dishes. My window was open but the screen was there but I remebered how sharp their claws are and was so scared he was going to come in that window and say hi. LOL Thankfully my scream freaked him out too and all he did was stand on his back feet to stare at me. I VERY quickly closed that window and watched him staring at me.
I think I'd much rather find the turtle. :)
Your block is awesome. Very cool the way the flower leans over the little turtle as if to protect him from the rain. (of course that would be IF it were raining)
turtles are NOT allowed in my garden as they like to eat my tomatoes! Correction-real turtles not allowed-have one othe sandbox style htat I use to make compost out of my garbage.

ReplyDeleteThe most unusual thing I found in my garden happened yesterday. It's November, and I found new blossoms opening on my tomato plants, Pineapple Sage and Flowering Quince bushes. The weather has been so strange lately, that my plants must think it's Spring.
Love that turtle block. Now that we have cleaned out the garden the squirrels are enjoying planting nuts in the soft soil. I would love to have only flowers in my garden!

ReplyDeleteMy garden is about 5 ft X 5 ft. Previously I hadn't been able to grown anything but have been having some success, really surprised me but my knockout roses really did well this year. I know that isn't unusual for most people but for me...Anyway, I love your block, the turtle is so cute!

ReplyDeleteMy unusual find ~ Bumble bee nest; though a surprise, is a most welcome find. I've stayed away from the nest area but enjoy watching them around the flowers. Physics says they can't fly but someone forgot to tell the 'humble bumble'.

ReplyDeleteSuch a darling block--and even better in the mini-quilt. We have a flower (a mystery one) that is just opening up (in chilly November in the Midwest). It's sort of zinnia-ish, but not sure. The color is orangey pink and there are two more blossoms that may still open (the leaves are blackish, though, so not sure how long it will last).

ReplyDeleteIt was so cold here (WA) that my garden didn't grow well but a nice big patch of petunias did LOL. They must have self-seeded from the soil from last year's flower pots. Other than that an occasional deer stops by to see if there is anything worth nibbling.

What I found in my garden this year would not make a great quilt block - SLUGS - hundreds of babies all summer. I'd rather find a turtle!
ReplyDeleteBesides the slugs and moles, I once found a baby possum. Luckily I saw him before the dogs did and I was able to shoo tem inside.
ReplyDeleteThe most unusual thing found in our garden (besides critters of snakes, deer, rabbits, birds, possum, coons, turkey, lizards, gopher, moles, etc.) - on a pink rose bush there was a caterpillar which was the same pink as the bloom. It's like it ate the buds and turned pink. It was so strange to see.
ReplyDeleteI found pieces of what looked like torn up fiber. Found out my Corgi had taken recycled cardboard out of the bin and torn it to pieces under the roses.

ReplyDeleteOk. You asked, so I will tell you what I found in my garden a few summers ago. Ick ick ickity ick. I found a large....dead....rat....under my tomato plant. Yucky yucky yucky. Someone in the neighborhood must have set out poison, then it crawled over and died in my yard. Oh, and this summer I discovered a dead rat floating in the water barrel under the apple tree...this happened TWICE! I don't get it...

ReplyDeleteI've not ever had a turtle visit my garden, but other critters certainly have. That's not so unusual since I live surrounded by state park property. The strangest has to be the 'reindeer' my then 5 year old granddaughter saw eating acorns. I seriously doubt reindeer live in the Southern US. :)

Cute block indeed, well done! I once found an arrow in my garden that was coming from our neighbour, not a nice found unfortunately as it could have been dangerous if one of us had been out when it went over the fence...

ReplyDeleteI don't have a garden b/c the deer eat everything! They are really overpopulated in my area. However, when I lived somewhere where the flea infested lyme disease rodents didn;t eat everything, my garden favorite was lupines!
ReplyDeleteI once found a plastic skunk that showed up one day after I had some landscapers doing some work in our backyard. He is still sitting there 5 years later.

ReplyDeleteIn my garden, hopping away one early morning, were little cotton tail bunnies. We put up a fence after their visit. They love those tender young sprouts.
