Modern Batik Challenge featuring Accordion

Disclaimer:  The fabrics used to make this quilt were given to me by Island Batik.
My Island Batik Ambassador project for the month of June is the Accordion quilt.

This month's theme was Modern Batik Challenge.  When I designed this quilt, it looked modern, but I'm not all that sure the finished quilt has a modern feel.  I've been told that it has a tribal vibe.

I used the Alpine Jingle fabric collection from my Island Batik box for this quilt.

The first thing I did was sew a gazillion half square triangle units. Here are some of them up on the design wall.

The coolest thing happened when I chain pieced them together into pairs.  They arranged themselves into circles on the floor as they came off my sewing machine!  I had to snap a photo of it.  How fun!

Right around this time, I realized it was June.  I had three quilting deadlines, the kiddos were about to get out of school for the summer break, and I had family coming to visit for the second half of the month.  I put aside my regular schedule, and started to sew, sew, sew!  Because of that, I don't have any pictures of the blocks coming together, but here is a pic of one of the blocks after quilting.

One of the characteristics modern quilts often have is a lack of borders, but this quilt just didn't look finished without them, so I added three.  The innermost border, the red one, was made with strips cut from the 10" squares of the Alpine Jingle fabrics.

I felt like this quilt needed all straight line quilting, so out came my walking foot.  I tried the Hobbs Thermore batting for the Accordion quilt.  I've never used this type of batting before.  I like how smoothly it quilted.  My needle glided along the quilt like butter.

I simply followed the lines of the red and green shapes in the blocks, and quilted vertical straight lines down the large gold panels. I then echoed the lines of the borders around the edges of the quilt.

I bound the edges of my quilt with the same groovy green tree fabric as I used for the outer border.

 So pretty!

  Quilt Stats:
Finished Quilt Size:  52" x 60"
                                                         Block Size:  8" x 8"
Fabrics:  Alpine Jingle by Island Batik
                                                         Batting:  Hobbs Thermore
Thread:  King Tut by Superior Thread

That was my June Island Batik Ambassadors project, the Modern Batik Challenge featuring the Accordion quilt.  Time to put this rocking chair to good use and start planning my July project.

New Pattern! Modern Mini Star Quilt

 Modern Mini Star Quilt

The pattern for the Modern Mini Star Quilt is available now!

Sew a tiny star quilt to add sparkle to your table top or wall.

This quilt is quick and fun to sew.  The tiny center star measures just under 2" square and is paper pieced for easy and accurate handling of the tiny pieces.

The Modern Mini Star quilt's overall dimensions are 20" x 20", perfect for a table topper or to jazz up a small wall space in your home.

I used a variety of Island Batik fabrics to sew the model.

It would make a nice outdoor decoration for a patio party, too. I love the way it brightens up this white wicker settee.

I quilted my model in simple straight lines, 3/4" apart with Aurifil Thread in a beige color.

The backing features another fun Island Batik fabric.

I usually do my binding in a fabric that matches the outer border, but this time I used a gray bubbly print fabric.

Gorgeous outdoor photo. Stars play well in a natural setting.

Fabric Sneaky Peeky!

It's sneaky peeky time!  I just wanted to share a pic of this adorable upcoming fabric line I've been working with.  This is Calico Crow by Lauren Nash for Riley Blake.  Isn't this just the cutest fabric?  Think Fall sewing, especially for the kitchen.  The white fabric on right has pumpkin recipes printed on it.  It's adorable!  This should be in your local fabric shop in June.
