First Peacock Applique

My Peacocks in a Tree block is coming along nicely!  Last night I appliqued the first peacock and some more of the leaves.  I used a purple hand-dyed looking fabric for the peacock, and I think it came out nicely.  Now one more smaller peacock on the left and a few more leaves to finish.

Again, this is from Jane Townswick's book, Artful Album Quilts. It's my NFL project for the season. Last night my Carolina Panthers had a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, 25-10, in their last preseason game.  They won 3 out of 4 preseason games this year.  Lookin' good!  So is the applique.

Quilts Lost and Found

Are you a member of my Facebook group, Quilter's Show and Tell?  If you are, you probably saw my post yesterday, when I found this long lost quilt top:  "I found it! I found it! I found it! I finally found the Pine Tree quilt panel I sewed with the intention of making a curtain for my laundry room. It's been lost for YEARS. Can I get a Woo-hoo!!? I'm so happy!"

I was cleaning out the quilting studio yesterday.  I always try to do a little bit of organizing when I do that, and there it was, wrapped up in some backing fabric, in the bottom of a crate.  Amazing.  It's just a simple Pine Tree panel I put together to use as a curtain in my laundry room.  Now it's a U.F.O.

While I was cleaning, I changed out some of the quilts I had on display.  I hung Fresh 'N Fancy up on the big wall behind the quilt frame.

I hung the Cross Stitch ABC quilt up in the very narrow hallway between my studio and the living room.  It's so narrow, it was difficult to take a photo.

And for now, the Christmas Star Medallion is draped over the back of this well worn chair in my room.   This chair is for the kids to sit and visit while I'm sewing at night.  Sometimes they play video games, sometimes they do homework, sometimes they just chat and snuggle under the quilt.  I've thought about recovering the chair, but the cats enjoy using it for a scratching post.

How long have the quilts been hanging in your home?  Is it time to give them a break and redecorate?  Do you change quilts with the seasons?  Autumn is just starting here.

New Craftsy Pattern!

Good morning all!  I hope you are having a winsome Wednesday.  I've just added the Love Trip Quilt Pattern to my pattern shop on Craftsy.  This means you can purchase it as an instant PDF download, and start sewing right away.

Here's a pic of the quilt top, before borders, hanging in front of the vintage farmhouse my family calls home.

If you prefer a packaged paper pattern in your mailbox, the Love Trip Quilt Pattern is also available in my Etsy shop, Curlicue Creations.

I decided to hand quilt this baby - no small undertaking as the finished size is 99" x 99".  It is almost done.  I have a few stitches left to do in the borders, add the binding, and voila - it will be on my bed.

Busy, Busy, Back to School!

Sorry I haven't posted for a while.  The kids have been keeping me very busy with lots of back to school activities.  Finally it is day two of the 2013/14 school year, and I have a few minutes to bake a chocolate pecan tart (yummy!), and write a post.

Trent "helped" me out this week by dumping the contents of my scrap basket out all over the studio floor.  Oh lucky me.  I though it looked rather like a volcano eruption.

Levi had his Ninth birthday celebration.  How did he get so old?

And Gavin had his first high school football game.  That's him in the middle with the ever present black hoodie, playing the trumpet.  Their school lost terribly.  I think it was 43 - 0, but the marching band had a great time anyway.

After all that I had a little time to work on my hand applique project.  Here's how my Peacocks in a Tree block looked when I started yesterday.

And here's how it looked when I stopped for the day.  Only a few more leaves to go, the two Peacocks, and this block will be complete.  This is from Jane Townswick's book, Artful Album Quilts.

Tonight I will be working on September's Star Block of the Month Tutorial.  I can't wait to finish it up and post it for you next week.  Stay tuned....

Sunday Sneak Peek

Look at what I just loaded onto the frame last night.  I can't reveal the whole quilt yet, but here's a little sneaky-peeky!

Aren't the batik fabrics just gorgeous?  These are from Island Batik.  I love the way the little dots glow.

NFL Stitching

I watch the Carolina Panthers play football every year.  I wear my Panthers t-shirt and work on a different hand stitching project every season, win or lose.  Last night was the second pre-season game, Panthers v.s. Eagles.  The game didn't go too well.  The stitching did.

This year I'm working on blocks from Jane Townswick's book, Artful Album Applique.  This is the Peacocks in a Tree block.  I've pieced the background fabric, and stitched all the stems and some of the leaves.  There are a lot of leaves in this block.  It is fun to use different fabrics for the leaves.  Some of the fabric I used has green swirls.  One of the leaves has a little house on it.  One of the leaves is from a fish print.

Stay tuned to see how this develops.

Sewing Box Treasures

Yes, another find for the sewing collection.  Last Sunday I spied this pretty box at the local flea market.  I know I didn't need it, but the box design and hand painted flowers are just divine!

Plus it was only $2.00.

And my husband volunteered the $2.00.
And looky - it already had a spool of still useful white thread nestled inside.

I'm going to fill it up with more thread.  I think it will feel quite at home in the quilting studio with all the other sewing boxes.

Quilting - A Bit of this and a Pinch of that

Did you get any quilting done yesterday?  Here's what I accomplished in the wee bit of time I had.
I sewed up some glamorous little four patch blocks.

All blues and golds.  Here's a sampling of the blocks.  I'm not sure how many I made, but it was a nice little stack.
Now back into the box they go, for next time.

My husband came home with this small yard sale find.  One box of trims, one box of thread.  Thread is always useful, and trims are pretty and fun to look at.

Do you see the little plastic box in with the thread?  This is a No-Darn Patches and Tape kit.  I'm not sure how old it is, but I love the instruction paper that came with it.  "A new scientific development that mends SOCKS, HOSE, SHIRTS, and HOUSEHOLD LINENS - in SECONDS, without NEEDLE or THREAD.  NO-DARN is a sensational new mending item which every woman needs."  I just love stuff like that!

I also took a new photo session for the Mountain Bears Quilted Trivet last night.  That was fun.  I got this nice clear pic, plus some close-ups and one posing with a sexy bowl of strawberries.  Yum!

Hand Applique to Melt the Stress Away

Things have been a little hectic at my house lately.  Just things that we all go through in our daily lives.  I've been driving my oldest son back and forth to marching band practice a lot.  We're getting ready for back to school and one child's birthday.  My husband is acting like a rebellious teenager.  The three year old is behaving like a three year old.

I needed a day off!  So I did the closest thing I could.  I spent as much of the day as I could on my front porch, doing some hand applique.

I've been working on these blocks out of a Jane Townswick book, Artful Album Quilts.
I love her style.

At mid afternoon I had to shoo this Carolina Wren out of the house.  Poor bird!  It somehow got trapped upstairs in my younger sons' room.

This is the block I worked on yesterday, Mirror Image.

I've started six or seven of the blocks in the book, but only finished one so far.  I've pieced many of the backgrounds and I'm using mostly faded out, soft pastel colors.  I'm trying to get a romantic, shabby chic look.

This block would look better without the American Flag fabrics, but here's how it looked at the end of the day.  I finished sewing all of the leaves on.  Next, on to the flowers, and there are a lot of them!
I hope I get another day to sew on this soon.

This is the one block that I have completed, Vintage Vase.  Here you can see the look I am trying to achieve.

Star Quilt Block of the Month Tutorial #1 - Superstar

Today I'm starting a new blog feature, the Star Quilt Block of the Month Tutorial.  This feature is going to run for at least 12 months.  All blocks will be 12" finished size, so you can use them together in a Star Sampler Quilt, or sew 12 different Star Quilts, or get creative with your Stars and sew something truly unique.

The Star for August is Superstar.

I am sewing all of my Star blocks with some gorgeous new fabrics from Robert Kaufman.  I have a combination of the new Jennifer Sampou Studio Stash fabrics, some Artisan Batiks, and a few Fusion blenders.  I am having a giveaway of a big fat quarter bundle featuring all 13 of the fabrics I will be using at the end of this post.

Let's get started!

The Superstar Block requires four fabrics.  I used Dark Brown, Purple, Lilac, and Pink.

Cutting Instructions:

Dark Brown:  Cut 2 ea. 3-7/8" squares A                         Purple:  Cut 2 ea.  3-7/8" squares A
                     Cut 4 ea. 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" strips B                             Cut 2 ea.  2-3/8" squares C
                     Cut 2 ea. 2-3/8" squares C
                     Cut 4 ea. 3-1/2" x 2" strips D                      Lilac:  Cut 8 ea.  3-1/2" squares E
                                                                                                  Cut 8 ea.  2" squares F
Pink: Cut 1 ea.  3-1/2" square E

Sewing the Superstar Block
(All seam allowances are 1/4")

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the reverse side of all the Lilac 3-1/2" squares E, and the Lilac 2" squares F.

Lay one Lilac 3-1/2" square E on one Dark Brown 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" strip B, right sides together with top, bottom, and right edges lined up.  The drawn line should run from the top left center to the lower right corner of the unit.

Sew on the drawn line, from edge to edge.

Flip the Lilac fabric open and press.

Trim away the two layers of backing fabric, leaving an approximate 1/4" seam allowance.  Save the cut away triangles for a future project.

Lay a second Lilac 3-1/2" square E face down on the unit with top, bottom, and left edges lined up.  The drawn line should run from the top right center to the lower left corner of the unit.  Sew on the drawn line, from edge to edge.

Flip, press, and trim as before.  The unit should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2".  Repeat to sew a total of four large units.

Using the Dark Brown 2" x 3-1/2" strips D and the Lilac 2" squares F, sew four small units in the same manner.  The small units should measure 2" x 3-1/2".

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the reverse side of the two Dark Brown 3-7/8" squares A.
Pair them right sides together with the two Purple 3-7/8" squares A.

Sew 1/4" away from the drawn line on both sides.

Cut on the drawn lines.

Open out and press to make four 3-1/2" triangle square units.

Using the Dark Brown 2-3/8" squares C, and the Purple 2-3/8" squares C, sew four small triangle square units in the same manner.  The units should measure 2" square.

Using the small flying geese units, the small triangle square units, and the Pink 3-1/2" square E, lay out the components of the inner star.  Be careful to orient the pieces the correct way, with the Dark Browns on the outer edges.

Sew into three rows.

Sew the three rows together, completing the inner star.  The center should measure 6-1/2" square.

Lay out the entire block, once again being careful to orient all the Dark Brown fabrics to the outside edges.

Sew the units into three rows.
Isn't this exciting?!!

Sew the three rows together to complete your block.
Smile!  Enjoy your block.  There are eleven more sparkling star blocks to come.   Become a follower of the Curlicue Creations blog and join in on the fun!

And now for the giveaway!  Robert Kaufman Fabrics has graciously provided the fabric for the Star Block of the Month tutorials and I have this fabulous stack of fat quarters for one lucky reader to play with.  Just leave me a comment letting me know who your favorite "Superstar" is.  It can be anyone, a movie star, a singer, a sports figure, even your best friend.  I will pick a winner at random on August 7, 2013.
